Real Japanese History

After years of reading manga, I'm starting to read a bit of Japanese history. So far, I only have a basic knowledge of that history, but maybe enough to recognize memorable historical figures in stories.
Does anyone know a manga set in some period of Japan's past which tells it's story in a historically accurate way, or close to it?
The one that comes mind first is Nobunaga no Chef.
Ooku may or may not fit, though it probably fits more than not especially since it does have notes.

You can also check out Jin. It progressively deviates from the actual history, but it's a very good series.

Perhaps Sakura Juuyuushi, though I'm not sure how closely it follows history as the series goes on.

Rurouni Kenshin?
...has a tiny bit of historical accuracy. At least, it says it does. 😉

I was kind of hoping to find the events of one of those endless clan fights in the pre-shogun period, or maybe the founding of the shogunate or the Meiji Restoration, narrated in a manga.
It's very hard to remember what happened because it's such a different culture with such unfamiliar names. Seeing the story play out in a manga would help. I guess the Japanese learn those events in school though, so why should they read the same story in a manga?
It was a long shot. Thanks for those who tried though.

There's Showa: A History of Japan, by Shigeru Mizuki. It's later than you were talking about but because it's during a time the author lived (though he was very young) there's other interesting information and a kind of accuracy you won't find in other historical manga.

The story of Shinsengumi (Edo/Meiji) is shown in a cool way in Hakuouki, though I would suggest reading the visual novel (there's also anime). This vn is pretty much a history lesson with romance and supernatural elements 🙂
