It depends. I read a lot of one volume series, and with those I can generally tell before getting halfway through the first chapter. But you can also have a series that you like in the beginning, but then because of how the plot develops in the later chapters or volumes, you end up disliking it.

Yes, well said. For me actually, there is neither "good" nor "bad" series. There is only series I like, series I don't like and series I have yet to try out.
