I like the idea of shoujo being like cotton candy. Especially since I tend to classify it (in my mind) by degree of "fluff"...

Shoujo is indeed cotton candy. Pure sugar.
It will make you wanna puke.
Shoujo will also make you diabetic, so you shouldn't eat much of it.
It's not a problem for me though, since I can't eat a lot of it (the taste is tiring and sweet stuff like that are generally not my thing)
BL is like dark chocolate with dried little fruits in. (like raisins, or cranberries)
You can't have enough, and it's better for your health.
Seinen is like those sour candies. You like to chew them, suck on them, and enjoy them. But after some time you just need to stop.
Josei is like pure bitter chocolate. In order to enjoy it, you must find the prime kind, or else it will taste too bitter.
Shounen is indeed like bubble gum. It's nice at the begining, but it looses its taste soon enough, and you have to spit it out.
Note: All very genral, with no genre taken into account.
