Ratings/Comments Helpful?

Recently, I've been making a concerted effort to make a comment and give a rating whenever I finish a series, or to create a synopsis if the info page doesn't have one. I just wanted to know if doing this is helpful to you guys or should I (and others who also make the effort) not bother... 😛

my choice was well it don't know don't care but that was only beacuse i leech everything non shoujo/shounen ai/yaoi so usually when i see a series i pretty much have already scoped it out. and well i do add ratings or comments on the ones i really really love. but yeah comments and rating section just needs more time and more people adding comments and ratings :/ and thanks for going through the extra effort of adding ratings and comments. i'm sure alot of people greatly appreciate it. or i guess we'll see with the poll << >>
why back in the day we didn't 'download', we had to swim to japan if we wanted fresh anime and that was only if...

Well, it's helpful to B-U, so that helps me...But B-U never helped me decide to read a series, so why should it start?

It has helped me when i try to find some random manga to read. If there's a good comment it usually decides if i read that or not

Indeed, depends on the comments/ratings. I usually filther out the 1s and 10s and read the non "AWESOME!!!!one!!!" or "It sucks!!!!eleven!!" ones.

I have to say they are generally useless.
Every dead body that is not exterminated becomes one of them. It gets up and kills! The people it kills get up and kill!

Personally I would prefer that the comments section be the most useful part of the site. What people say about a series can really help me decide whether I want to read it or not. Any suggestions on how to improve it? Some have said that separating the ratings system from the comments system might help a bit... but I don't think that will help that much...

Rarely do comments say something about the series that impacts me. And the ratings and comments are usually done by extremist. Generally, if you don't feel strongly about a series you're not going write about it, ya know.

I myself actually find the comments helpful (and the ratings as well although to a lesser extent) when I'm trying to decide whether something is worth reading. I do agree that there are many end-of-the-spectrum ratings but even these are helpful IMHO: I'm more inclined to try reading those rated highly and dismiss those rated low...
Hmm... this poll is pretty even across the board. C'mon MangaUpdaters! Put your $.02 in! I see all these views but so few votes!! 😕

neither ratings nor comments interest me.
because you can't rate without a comment ratings are even more worthless...
i usually look at the genre and the synopsis when deciding whether to download or not. and whether i read it or not depends on the art then....
the art is one of the most important points ^^
maybe we could integrate a 3-4 pages preview on B-U xD

And then there's the problem of hosting and which scanlations/raws?...Nah, we won't do that. Search for it yourself

I selected somewhat helpful, if a series catches my interest I look at what's written down for that series.

Question for y'all: what kind of comments do you find most helpful? Sometimes, when I write my little blurbs, it's hard to say anything specific without giving anything away and lately, I feel like I've been repeating myself... bleh... 🙁
Any suggestions or opinions?

I have been considering just making it so you can rate without commenting, because this has been requested a bit. Might help out with having to repeat everything...

I think I go by categories/content. I want something light. I love the art and I look for that too.
I have to say that currently, ratings are influencing my decision, just because I don't have a good feel for things, yet.
I have a new co-favorite along with Yuu Watase, the mangaka of KouKou Debut. Well, I love KouKou Debut, anyway. Her art is nice, and stylistically unique from what I know of manga and anime. (You can tell I'm really new, huh?)
Well, the point I was trying to make is that I skipped over KouKou Debut at first. I think it was the synopsis that someone wrote, whether a tranlation of the publisher's or whatever, that influence my decision to skip. In the end, it was the ratings and popularity that brought me back.
While I was waiting for the downloads, I skipped around the site and read the other comments. I found them to be in line with my own impressions.
I think comments can be either a good or bad thing, depending on how much and what they tell. Ratings/statistics tell a large portion of the story, perhaps more than comments.
