"all the good bands are gone"
"we only have :insertmainstreamartistshere:"

first i think music is subjective so there isn't good and bad music, in the 90's and alike where the internet didn't rule the world, people didn't have a way to discover music(just Mtv and alike), there is a lot and a lot of ways of getting music(just like manga! if you don't search you won't find something "good")

"But NOW PEOPLE DO, so what is their excuse? Why are so many people buying only what is played on the radio when they now have the internet and access to unlimited resources of discovery? "

most of the times is your fault if you can not find "good" music, also there is nostalgia people whatsoever they don't want to move on

@Kōhai what are you talking about, is easier than ever, just sit it your chair and hear some stuff, from myspace, pure volume, last.fm in the 90's and under if you didn't go to gigs how will you ever known if you like an unknown band which music isn't on the radio?

Oops, didn't read correctly and voted for the wrong thing, but I definitely think music has downgraded a lot. With all the new technology and such, you don't need to know how to sing at all. You can say 'charlie bit my finger' and make it into a song with auto tune. :/ The real talents and people I have heard sing naturally and beautifully never make it to the top. 😐

I can't answer the poll, but I was talking to a guy in my class once, he too said music nowadays is really commercial. I think that's true, off course there are still people who make music from the heart. But little kids like that bieber shemale, their only use is making other little kids scream. Sharts nowadays don't say anything about the quality of music. I would answer that it's not degraded everywhere.

no. is you think that, you are not looking hard enough. music is like people - there will ever be a shortage of good people that you dont know, so there will never be a shortage of good music that you have not found

Not at all, it is subjective. Music style has evolved, whether it suits the tastes of each individual person is up to them. Music, of course has become more commercial but you can easily say the same for the stuff that came out in the 80's and what have you.

Every generation thinks that the next generation of music is complete crap. It's just how it goes.

I can agree with that; my parents are at odds with the type of music I listen to, especially if they're Japanese.

I for one, am wondering what the hell has gone wrong with the music industry. Sure, there was a decline in songs that actually made an impression but at least it wasn't as bad as it is now. Geez, if repeating the same damn words to a electronica/ dance beat would sell millions and get them an award, any bloody idiot out there would be a huge pop icon.

Feelings and cheezy love no longer garner profit; apparently sex sells better.
The whole reason why I dumped the western music scene years ago and found solace in JPop. 🙄

Nope, not at all.

Not every song from the 60's was totally amazing, just like not every song made today is totally amazing, there is good music and bad music. Always has been, always will be.

And for the record, just because something is popular, doesn't mean it is bad. Music isn't just about lyrics, there is rhythm, structure, and harmony as well... If a song can make you dance, is that not enough of a emotional response? Or does it have to, I don't know, somehow remind you of your pet lizard who died or some girl who broke your heart in high school?

I second this. If you don't like today's pop and claim you can't find modern music you like then you just aren't trying hard enough. Turn off the radio and be your own dj, find something fresh that you like and share it with your friends. That's what my friends and I do and it's worked so far for us. 😛

Third. My friend was declaring to me once that all Hip-Hop is dead, and then I shut him up by showing him some underground Hip-Hop artists like Mr. Lif, Jay Electronica, Del the Funky Homosapien and Edan.

I can't speak for other genres, but I find that it's getting harder to find good rock bands. Not metal, but simple alternative rock. They just sound(and even look) the same now, even if most aren't mainstream.

a lot of alt rock bands are moving towards indie/punk. with the recording industry in the toilet, lots of indie/punk bands are getting their feet in the door. look there and find awesomeness

There's a difference between 'quality degrading' and 'style changing'. It all depends on your taste.

puts on fancy hat and a monocle

With all due respect, you are incorrect. Mainstream music is "mainstream" because a significant population of people are aware of it and/or listen to it. This is why it is also considered "popular" music or "pop". While fans of this genre will undoubtedly include many human beings of poor taste and lesser intelligence (what you referred to as so-called "retards"), it also includes many cultured and intelligent humans. I humbly consider myself among this latter group as I can appreciate the qualities of certain popular songs yet retain my primary tastes outside of the realm of pop.

end pretentiousness 😉
