Has the quality of music degraded?

I do not think it has. Sure, with the advent of modern technology and the easy proliferation of music through the internet the quantity has increased, which naturally means there will be more crappy pieces of music out there.
But even so, there are still millions, if not billions, of quality pieces of music. Compared to the music of the past the quality has not degraded, the style has just changed.
We tend to only remember the good ones and forget that there were crappy songs in the past too.

Well the lyrical content has degraded over the years for sure. But there are good artists out there. Some are signed by major labels, but don't get nearly as much publicity as the money-making crap artists.

No, it hasn't.
While, yes, a lot of the popular music on the radio is passionless, talentless crap, there's a lot of amazing music out there that just isn't well known. shrugs That doesn't mean that the quality of music has degraded, by any means.

I never liked the music of well, my generation. And I was convinced ever since someone noted that not even a century ago there was soul, and now there is rap.

Well, there's more and more of mainstream music being shoved into your ears via radio, tv, and fast food (that set the bg music to radio).
shrug
It all depends on your taste in music vs the taste of most of the population.
If American mainstream ain't cutting it, go indie, and if that still doesn't cut it for you, go Japanese or Korean, or any other foreign language.
I myself, love my NicoNico singers, and Meguro's music...

Supposedly vinyls are better quality than the digital formats.
I probably couldn't tell the difference though.

I don't think that it's degraded...just that the type of music popular now has just changed from what it was before.

Supposedly is the key word here. The people who say that are basically on the same track as religious nutcases who try to make you join their cult (though, in the "technological" field rather than the sociological one).

Not really. But the audience definitely has.
Lol.
In my opinion, music has its ups and downs, and right now is not exactly stellar. I haven't found anything like Jimi Hendrix or Led Zeppelin released within the past few years, but I have found some good indie music.

Yes. Before, singers actually knew how to sing. Kesha uses autotune and absolutely cannot sing, she sounds like a drunk monkey fornicating with a turtle.
Theres still okay bands out there now but none of them are stellar enough. All the good bands died or don't make music anymore.. 🙁

I doubt that the general quality of music has dropped. It's more likely that there's more focus on a specific music genre atm that is monotone and meant for dancing at a club while shaking your booty.
If you look in the right places you will find beautiful, sophisticated music. You just have to put in some effort and be open minded. In my country there are public libraries in almost every city, and you can use their wide range of services for free. I collect new, exciting music of - imo - high quality every week. 😃 My collection is quite big by now... It fills up too much space in my computer. 😐

What's considered 'popular' on the charts has certainly diminished in quality, though that might just be the people involved in making those charts.
Twenty years ago, the vast majority of people would have gotten their music from radio or television. Now we all share obscure bands and genres via mp3s and the internet in general, so that a band doesn't have to be on MTV or a mainstream radio station to be considered successful.
