So, I have the Dark Reader add-on for Firefox and I've forgotten what this site looks like without it.

It works well enough that I'll probably just keep using it like this and not bother with an "official" dark mode.

If you "modernize" the appearance of this site I'm going to cry.

Depends on the device I'm using, I suppose.

Something I use at a desk like a desktop/laptop? Light mode. On a phone/tablet, anything that I could conceivably read in bed? Dark mode (+1 for the Dark reader addon).

So if you decide to implement a theme switcher I hope you add the option to follow the system setting, or alternatively make it device dependent as opposed to an account preference...

Dark. Everywhere. Always. It should be illegal for dark mode pages to flash white mode too for a second.

I voted on light mode, but it really depends on the app I'm using.

No anger from me about the last poll, I just thought it was pretty bad timing; if anything it was kinda funny. Most of the vitriol seemed to come from someone who decided that anyone who doesn't share their views is an idiot instead of rationally discussing things like adults. Nothing worth really taking note of though.

As for light vs dark mode, I picked dark, but like others have already said, it depends. The current theme for this site works fine for me. I don't really like stark white or pitch black, but I'm pretty flexible on most color schemes that fall between the two extremes. For dark mode sites I generally prefer more of a charcoal or the like instead of true black; if the black is too dark I find the sharp contrast to be a bit uncomfortable.

Given the choice though, I'd lean darker for most things rather than lighter since it tends to be feel less eye-strainy, and light modes are more likely to be pure white.

I actually really dislike how on most official translations' desktop websites (particularly tapas and tappytoon since I read a lot of stuff from them), you don't have dark mode, and when reading manhwa it'll have these bright white backgrounds that I can find rather uncomfortable and distracting, so sometimes I'll buy the chapters on the official platform and then go read them reuploaded on a pirate website that I can set to dark mode 😂

I usually just use whatever is default... Which lands me on light mode more often than not...

Dark mode on my phone settings and most sites and apps. Only if there's an official dark mode though. I don't really like forced dark mode settings, sometimes the text, images, etc just are not compatible with the background. If you update the option on mangaupdates, I'll be glad to try it. 😄

Between light and dark modes, I have found a significantly higher amount of websites that bother me using a dark theme.

Yes, websites can be too light and too dark (and too contrast-y), and I've seen both done well and poorly. But if I had to choose a default, I choose light mode until the number of dark mode apps and websites that bother me shrink significantly.

I'm a jack of all trades but master of none. Too many jars and not enough hands.

Out of curiosity LazyReviewer, what do you find bothers you a lot about the dark mode sites?

Oh for a min I thought we'd gotten a Dark Mode and I was frantically searching for the drop-down menu on the front page.

I'd love a Dark mode I turn it on always for any site as long as it's available.

On OS level Im a dark mode user and almost all apps I use support dark mode. On laptop where Im mostly in the browser window, I don't use any extensions to change the theme. Though because browser is also set to dark mode some websites open in dark theme because they have it like that. On my phone sometimes I would enable light mode for few hours and it feels so refreshing and new.

If you ask about me about having a dark mode on mangaupdates, I would say to have both and make it so that it adjusts to whatever browser settings user have. Yes there is a nostalgia I feel when Im here but to gain new users and sustain longer, a redesign would be a good step. Reddit's old design was great and not all are fan of its redesign but I think it would not have gained so many users in recent years with the old design. But for all the OG members please keep this design as an opt-in setting.
