What exactly do editors do?
I've been interested in joining a scanlation group but I don't know any languages.

Editors are not editors in the sense of English works, where editors are the ones who checks grammar, spelling mistakes and weird sentences. Those are called proofreaders.

A cleaner (and redraws included) cleans the pages and redraws the image so it looks like as if there were no Japanese text in it.

A typesetter puts in the English text into the pages which have been cleaned.

Editors are people who clean and typeset text. They do both the cleaners job and the typesetters job (and the redrawers job). When I began giving back in to the scanlation world we only had editors. Still even today I find them to be better than cleaners (or redrawers).

As editor you do clean the chapters but when you have to redraw, you only redraw as much as you need and let the text cover the rest. This can be used in pages where redrawing everything is impossible and redrawing some of the page is can be done.
After all, no one is going to check the whole redrawn page and readers only read it for a few mins max before moving to the next page. 😉

I hope that covers your question.

Heh, well most people think it's boring as hell. Still I agree, it's not that hard to learn, hard to master but not that boring as people make it to be.

Oh and BUMP 😛

You mentioned QCer, is that the same as a proofreader? just being curious, that's all. 🙂

A Qcer is a quality checker right?

No that's a PR. A QC is...

A Qcer is a quality checker right?

Yes, it is.

A qualitychecker checks up on the mistakes done by the translator, proofreader, cleaner, typesetter and fix them if it's small mistakes or send the chapter with errors to correct to the guilty person. It can be missing translations, bad grammar, bad ir missing cleaning, untyped or out of focus text bubbles and so on.
In my opinion a QCer needs to have some insight in all of the aspects of a scanlation to be a good QCer since this is the last defense before the chapter is released to the readers.

Aaaaand BUMP!
If you are interested in joining, send us a mail. I'm a bit busy right now but I will try to respond as fast as possible. 😎 (But not as a proofreader, we don't any right now)

I've been thinking of joining a group. No experience but handy with gimp/photoshop.

Learn fast, never make the same mistakes twice if I know about them, and would be happy to do editing, cleaning, typesetting or whatever.

I am more interested in shounen stuff, but am not adamant about it, and would be happy to be associated with a group that's not doing h, yaoi, yuri, super-ecchi or smut.

It's fine, we do shounen stuff since our tls want to do. The matter on h/yaoi/yuri/etcetc is the same so it's cool.
Send a mail to the mail address and I will respond to it as fast as possible. A bit busy with my thesis but I should be able to reply to everyone tomorrow. (Taking a free day)

BUMP to wanting new people...ohandstopsendingmemailsaboutwantingtobeproofreaders.

Okay....Don't know you accept me or not...?
Here my spec....

  • My English is average
  • I'm not good in drawing
  • For now, I'm still rookie in every position..
  • If you provide me the right software and little guide..I can be useful...
  • Sometime...I can be a clumsy person...

If possible, for now...I want to be the group substitute member only.... 😀 😀 😀
