If I heard someone say that, then I would probably be an ass and correct that person..
I know it's nothing one should even care about. But i like being an ass..

lol at people getting upset for real. w/e I could care less. I do differentiate them because people sometimes get into a tizzy about it. But I don't care.
Hmm I'm just like this :/ Manga and Anime are different mediums. I love manga, anime not as much. I like anime because I love animated shows/movies but I prefer books to tv.

To me, whether someone calling them 'cartoons' irritates me or not depends on the implications behind what the person is saying. If they call anime cartoons on the basis that all drawn media that is animated is inherently a 'cartoon', then I don't even think about it. But if they refer to anime as cartoons with the implication that 'cartoons = something childish and meant for kids' then I find it quite annoying.

I'm curious to know what Japanese people call Disney cartoons. Do they call it a cartoon or an anime?

They call it anime. (But there may be some Japanese who call it cartoon.) Because in Japan any animation is refer to anime.
So yeah, stuff like Micky mouse, Batman, and etc. are anime to them. Why you may ask? Because they're all just animation even though the style is different.

Eh, honestly, the way I see it is that anime is just Japanese cartoons. Cartoons are moving 2D animation. Just because they're from a different country, doesn't mean that they aren't cartoons. IMO, the word cartoon spreads over all age categories; Family guy is just as much of a cartoon as Fairly-Odd Parents, or Spongebob or bleach or whatever. they're all 2D moving pictures; style/nationality doesn't come into it.
Of course, I'm opposed to manga being called anime. that's like saying comic books are just like cartoons/2D animation. which is just plain wrong.

I really don't think it matters as long as the person your talking to knows what your talking about. It really also depends on the person your talking to. My Aunt L. has no idea what anime is so I would tell her I was watching a really funny cartoon called Urusei Yatsura about a blue haired alien and her fiance, and she wouldn't care I didn't say anime. My friend would probably care though, cause she would know the difference and be confused by me using the word/term.

I quite agree. If you don't agree that shows like family guy/simpsons/south park are cartoons, than you're clearly delusional.

I see "anime" as a subset of "cartoon", meaning a "japanese cartoon". Just like how a "square" is a subset of a "rectangle", meaning a "rectangle with sides of equal length".

So I guess then, the question is...does it bother you when someone calls a square a rectangle? Because it IS a rectangle.
