This poll, suggested by our member CLouDFaeRie, is about the ages of the main characters that you guys read about. You have any preference in comparison with your own age?
You care to discuss your poll answer? You can do so on our forums here:

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related):

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Do you think you will abandon reading manga in the future?
Choices:
No! I will preserve this passion! - votes: 10706 (71.9%)
Yes, it's sad, but I think it won't last long - votes: 1546 (10.4%)
Of course, better sooner than later, because it takes so much time - votes: 418 (2.8%)
I don't really care. I only read to kill time... - votes: 2213 (14.9%)
There were 14883 total votes.
The poll ended: March 3rd 2012
I'm actually surprised with the results. The percentage of people possibly quitting manga is higher than I initially expected.

Now this is surprising, while i prefer young mc ranging from 14- 25 at most. I usually don't care the age of mc, if the story is interesting i'll read it. If one of you find the manga with older people(i mean very old) as mc and is interesting please do tell, i'll check it out.

Although, I will add that they make middle-schoolers look like adults and vice versa. When I was is middle school, there were like 4-6 girls with tits, all others were flat, and all the guys were skinny, few were built (I'm leaving out all the fat people lol). Apparently, girls in Japan are born with massive tits that only get bigger  If you strictly follow manga, that is. I just think that if they're going to throw in an age variable, at least make them look their age. A 13-year-old is either built like a brick house or has massive tits (DD breasts and higher is fucking sick in RL, with all the veins and shit... gross). When they pop in the self-conscious girl who has small breasts, that is the encapsulation of every Japanese girl that I've seen; I live in Cali, so I see a lot, but some do get implants
-No longer do I quote great scholars, the famous, etc. Kids feigning wisdom ruined it.
--I wont type a post like a college report. If you don't read it just for that reason, you don't have to post why your hoity-toity ass refused to. I swear, so many people on this site are so full of themselves. A lot seem to think they always have an "intelligent and/or logical" point or show signs of a superiority complex. They never admit they're wrong. Maybe partially, but excuses abound! :\
-Stop mailing me about my comments. I don't read them.

As I said, as long as it fits with their role and level of maturity and such I really don't mind their age.
Something like Mahou Sensei Negima is a bit of a special case, though. I still feel weird that he's only 10 years old but I really don't mind. I mean he's still pretty childlike in some aspects despite being quite mature
I do like it if the character is around my age though (as long as they're awesome, at least)
I never got the big breasts fetish myself. I am completely fine with B-C-cups on slender legs. No need to add all that extra fat just to make girls look 'curvy.' That is where shoujo wins (although they do exaggerate the guys' features). They look more realistic & actually sexier that way.

I don't care how old the protagonist is in comparison to my age. I just want to see more protagonists in their twenties or older, since there are more teenage protagonists in manga than I care to count.

Seriously, age rarely comes up as an issue or pivotal detail in the manga I read. Though sometimes I raise an eyebrow at supposedly "middle schoolers" fighting crime organizations and the such. But I suppose theyy do it in order to cater towards younger readers. Also, similar to That3rdGuy, I absolutely dislike when the girls have massive breasts. I don't understand why publishers and authors think that the big breasts are a "good" reason for an MC or someone to like someone else. Seriously, it's a lot more attractive when the girl is ("realistically") pretty rather than a walking impossibility.
Then you will have better luck looking for seinen/jousei titles, since they tend to follow older characters (though not necessarily).

Nope, no preference.
Although this poll made me wonder who was the youngest and oldest mc on the manga I've read, heh.

It's called a selling point. It's used to try and hook a bit of an audience that otherwise wouldn't even consider reading them.

I'm more surprised that there weren't more quiting votes... probably because those that have don't come here.

I've been reading manga since I was younger than Nobita, now I'm older than most of protagonists. I'm very perplexed as to how I'm gonna answer the poll.

Can't blame you. Hard to make a decision when most manga characters never seem to have a personality (or appearance/attitude/lifestyle) that matches their supposed age.
Just look at Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach. Compare him to his supposed age. Hard for anyone to really make a true judgement call given all this.

It's hard to really make a connection with a character that is in middle school. Especially when said character acts like they're a teenager, or older. I don't like 12 year olds professing undying love to each other in shoujo, and I don't like them being some super mature fighter either like in shounen.

For shounen titles I think younger characters are fine if we see them grow up. That's one of the main reasons why I loved Dragonball, Goku's growth through the series was worthwhile. If that can be conveyed properly it's good to use younger characters.
As for age in general, I'm ok with any age if it leads to a well thought out story, or if it suits the kind of mood I'm in or genre I'm craving.
