Printed volumes are the best! Most of what I read is English but I've attempted untranslated Japanese manga a few times.

I thought it pretty interesting that many people for whom English is a second(/third/etc) language still prefer to read English manga rather than in their own language. I wonder what makes English "better" for manga translations...?

I've probably said it before, but I completely disagree with those saying scanlations are more accurate than official translations. There's the "You don't speak Japanese so how do you even know?" point but besides that, official translations are just so much easier to read because someone actually gets paid to make the dialogue sound realistic and fix any grammar or spelling mistakes. Everyone has their own experiences, but I almost always greatly prefer the official translations when I go back and compare them to scanlations.

I say scanslations. Printed volumes are nice too but you have to pay for them.

I have to say that is because we are used to read them in English... probably... and there is a huge chance that many things will always be lost in the translation and some of us, just don't like to read anything in our own language 😲

I've read some raw manga in Japanese & Chinese language and printed volumes in English and sometimes Spanish. I've also read some scans in English and some in its original Japanese form.

I read so much mangas, I'm too lazy to watch anime! 😛 😛 😛

I prefer to read manga in russian but our translators is really slow, so in most cases i have to make do with english(and sometimes japanese)

Yeah, but there are many parts edited out to keep age appropriate. Besides everyone knows how annoying, "Believe it!" became.

i like Scanlations since it comes up on a big screen, so i guess i pick that.

I like scanlations since you can organize them easily, and they take alot less space once you gather alot of volumes 😉 And you can also get a bigger view. But the quality varies alot unfortunately..

Scanlations also has the drawback of requiring you to actually be by the computer. Sometimes I'd like to lie in bed or whatever and read mangas instead 🙁

I really really hate censorship, and the commercially translated mangas sometimes has quite a bit of it, or even changed story. That's just... Horrible.. <.< And they're really really slow to translate. What are they doing all day?

Wouldn't want to read mangas in Swedish, not that there are that many being translated though... <.<

I prefer to have a book in my hands, either in Japanese or in English. 😎

When reading a manga, I always first read the scanlation, to see if I like it. (If I don't like it enough to keep it, I would have returned it at the bookstore anyway even if I had bought it.) If I like a series enough, I buy the whole series (printed volumes) in the original language. I like to own a physical copy of the book, in the way the author originally made it. There's something about the experience of having a real book, the feel of the turn of the pages, and the authenticity of seeing the work the way the author saw it and intended it to be. (I don't ever buy manga that's been translated into English, because first of all, it's way more expensive than the original, second, I usually find fault with the professional translation, and third, it just feels false somehow, like a shallow imitation, with the substance missing.)

I'd prefer something digital, since I'm have a bad myopia. As for the language, Japanese is preferred if I know and understand Japanese.

I don't understand japanese just yet but even if I did I'd still want it in english. I like having things in a digital format because it seems more permanant.

Umm... I thought I already commented on this thread..I feel like Déjà vu. XD

Anyways, I prefer the printed volumes. I love books, plus its my dream to have a library-like-full-of-only-manga room, so the printed volumes will help me accomplish that. <3 Anyhow, I prefer the printed volume since there are times when you either have no internet, no computer or simply no electricity...Yes, no laptops either, so if you depend on technology to un-bored you, you'll be screwed up. And I prefer volumes more than magazines, since in manga/anime magazines you barely get a chapter of the manga so it leaves you hanging, while the actual whole volume you can get hanged on more than in one measly chapter that the magazines like Shounen Jump gives you. D=
I'd love to understand other languages like Japanese, Korean and Chinese, but since I don't, I don't find it worth my starvation to buy something I won't enjoy the moment I get it on my hands. <3
So yeah, printed volumes of manga rule best. <3
