Well, with the bit of LQ scans, I hate it when a half erased VHS tape would give better quality picture than what I'm reading.

I don't like it when stuff is left untranslated, or blank speech boxes. It's a pet peeve of mine for bad translations, in a lot of cases, the Japanese just written in romanji, but left alone (Anki, etc.) when there IS an english equivalent, just without the honorific defined. The -samas and the -sans are fine to me though. Unlevelled pages, uncleaned pages, type just over the japanese, all sloppy garbage that a group that actually LIKES the manga should re-release in a worthy manner.

I've always thought that even though it is a pain to scanlate, if you like the manga, the pride of the people working on it should show. But seeing as how (according to the poll) waiting an extra few days to a week for a much better quality release isn't important, you get rush jobs and crappy releases.

When I was still a nooby to scanlation, I thought raw meant the first draft of the scan. So whenever i saw an absolutely terrible scan, I always thought "wtf, why is this the raw."

Personally I like it when they include okaa-san or aniki or those types of japanese/romanji. As long as they have it defined somewhere on the page, I think that kind of stuff is ok adds more Japanese back into the manga.

i hate it when the text looks wierd, or the images are really pixilated so you cant hardly make anything out.

I've seen scans (and official published books) of the manga mirror flipped, so you're forced to read it left to right instead of left to right. Confuses me if I start reading right to left than have to adjust to left to right 🤢 .

It's basically a matter of opinoin. My translator and I debated this at length. My stance is that if you TL the manga, it should be fully translated. His stance was the same as yours. Personally, scanlation is for non-Japanese speaking people to read manga, I don't think it's fair to force them to learn Japanese (however much) just to read and understand the manga they enjoy, I mean, if you're going to do that, you may as well just learn Japanese and read the raws.

to be honest the thing that bothers me the most is unfinished projects. Some groups will only scanlate part of the manga and then never touch it again and instead of dropping the project and letting other groups take it they just leave it as an active project. I HATE not knowing the ending for a story! There should be a rule- if a group hasn't released a new chapter in 2 years then other groups can pick it up.

2 years is way too generous ;P

If they don't release for a few months, ask to take over xD

1. tiny scans (that you have to zoom in but can't make out anything)
2. terrible spelling and grammar
3. scans from the weekly magazines with blue pictures instead of black
4. pages that vary in size ALL the time (one pic will be acceptable, the next is tiny)
5. huge water marks or group logos (like the one in the very LQ scans of Skip Beat before Enchantment Scans redid those volumes)
6. sentences that don't make sense
7. entire pages left untranslated (and in Chinese; with Japanese, I can at least read a couple of words and guess the meaning)
8. sfx that have been translated and the cover-up job is VERY noticeable (I like the group null because they leave the sfx alone and put a little note at the bottom of the caption)

5 and # 7 are my biggest complaint. Lol, as you can see, I can be very picky. Seriously, if I knew how to work with photoshop, I would gladly be an editor. Unfortunately, I'm too busy with stuff.

If you look at my link above, Storm In heaven teaches how to be a manga editor, and SIH has some incredibly high standards on cleaning and editing. I've tried some of it, it's not hard, just incredibly time consuming, and like you I don't have that much time either 😛

I dislike reading pages that are obviously not clean enough...as in you can still see most of the grey dirt. Luckily, I don't see too much of those usually, only occasionally in a few chapters.

I've been a translator & editor, my opinion is that it's quite a pain to remove gutter shadow or translate those speech columns 😀 Especially if the scans aren't that good, after you do editing for 20+ pages, you'll want to vomit blood at times. And when I see those columns of words I'll go "Woah what a huge amount of words @.@" But since I like reading English translations of what the mangaka said by other groups, I just bucked down to it ^^;;
Still, some readers want groups to release fast, and others expect good quality...the worst is when people expect both. Groups have a sacrifice one or try to find a good balance. Let's cut them some slack at times 😃

Most of it isn't hard... until you get to the freehand redrawing done in the middle of double pages that have a wide gap where the two pages meet. Depending on the original detail work, it gets incredibly hard there.

Well, I read one where it looked like coffee or somethin' was spilled on the page.

Stitching? Yeah, it's a pain.

Since I'm getting into manga editing I'm learning to appreciate that sometimes sacrifices need to be made, but there are some things that are unacceptable.

1. When scans are smaller than about 1000 pixels high.
2. Translation is garbage. (I understand that translating is hard, but translators and proofreaders, making the translation make sense is your job too. Most engrish is easy to fix.)
3. Badly leveled pages. I know that using curves can be sorta tricky (if you are a monkey), but if you don't know how to do anything except auto-level, then I have one thing to say to you. Practice makes perfect.
4. Worst of them all (fortunately the least frequent as well). I absolutely detest when an editor chooses to do no editing whatsoever, and simply converts the scan to black and white. My NES is less pixelized then these scans. [img]http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/7554/suidp0vh9.gif[/img]
