this is probably an off-topic, but i didn't wanna make another thread, so here goes...
what's the difference between the adult and mature genre?...i'm intrigue about the fact that both of their definitions are the same, except for mature being "subject matter which may be too extreme for people under the age of 17".....aren't people above 17 or so consider as adults? 😕

ye, i agree with you on the mature being 'subject matter', i think tht adult genre is more focused on the 'physical' stuff.
some ppl i know who are older than 17 are mature, and some others arent. everyones different, i mean you see 20-odd ppl acting like children and really young ppl acting mature, so its really not an age problem, its just the law....i think...

Well... Adult, I would think, guarantees the presence of graphic sex, and mature may have any combination of graphic: sex, violence, or strong language, but doesn't guarantee sex.

Yeah, I can see what you mean. Personally, a lot of people say that I act a lot more mature than my age suggests.
Btw, you (Cerulean) DID read the genre page, right? Unless those descriptions weren't good enough for you...

thanks for the clarifications...i DID read the genre page, and i just thought that there's no need for both adult and mature genres, since there's also the hentai and ecchi genres to support any kind of nudity contents in a manga series...

This is really off topic, but I don't know if people who seem immature online is actually immature... I found out that my brother plays MMORPGs and that he gives his age as 16 when he's only 10! It really made me wondering just how many of those immature teenagers I meet online are actually teenagers.
Back on topic, I read almost anything I get my hands on. I do seem to prefer more shounen/seinen series than shoujo/josei series. (I practically never pick up a josei manga.)

Meh, I just figured out that I never actually voted in this poll...
I guess I do follow the majority and read mostly the genres that are targeted toward my sex...

Well, I read both Shounen and Shojo, and I like them both. I guess I did things kind of backwards because the first manga genre I read was Shounen (because I didn't know the difference and because Shojo Beat didn't exist yet). Yet I still read more Shounen than Shojo ( 😮 because I'm a girl).

Good point with the adult vs. hentai bit. The differences between them suddenly gets really hard to pin down because you simply can't have Hentai without Adult content. So is the main difference between them a marketing thing then 😕
Back on point, I am a slave to the manga system. Being a male, when I first started out I read almost all shonen, and now I've gotten older I am reading more and more seinin.

but you can have adult without hentai. Hentai is something that has main focus to be erotic/arouse and the plot is sex driven, there are plenty manga that show sex scenes as part of their plot and don't aim to be erotic and sex is not main focus of the plot. Hentai is “porny”.
Imo "mature" should just refer to violence/gore and "adult" to sex (then you can just have both of them as genre for manga that have both), or maybe replace “mature” with “violence/gore” altogether. To me mature almost always means seinen/josei ie aimed at older readers.

Cying Freeman/Sanctuary are titles that I'd consider Adult without the "Hentai" characteristic.

Yeah, and so is Honeymoon Salad, I guess I didn't quite think that through. I thought maybe Hentai was some useless younger brother of Adult, but I guess it has its uses too.
Anyway, here's a thought: there should be a "clean doujinshi" genre added.

i quite agree...having 2 unclear genres like adult and mature at the same time is useless, so it's better to seperate the sex and violence from each other...also, if adult is use as reference to sex, perhaps there'll be no need for hentai, because that's consider as porn, which will lead to erotic stuff. that'll lessen up some confusion about whether a manga series contains either sex or violence when updaters insert adult and/or mature as its genre....

I think those two genres evolved from simply taking the genre information from the scanlator's websites. In the beginning, whenever there was not a genre, we just added it.
I think you guys have a good point though, and I like the distinction between adult and mature dealing with violence vs. sex (being short of hentai).
I'll talk this over with the staff. Thank you for your suggestions.

18/f here.
I read everything. D: As long as the art and story are pretty good. Though I do think I lean towards seinen/josei more.
