Maybe if Aikawa had taken off the hair accessory in Ch 17 and maybe worn his/her hair differently it would have sealed the deal. But apparently author wants to keep the tension going.

I have read nothing that implied that Maki is confused about Aikawa's gender. What I HAVE read is sexual confusion.

But if you go back a single page, from what you linked, you can see that Maki didn't get a view of the jewels. What he saw was Aikawa's butt. And both men and women have those.

It's pretty ambiguous if you want it to be. Put the scenario in a more, ah, traditional romcom, and the dialogue would conform exactly to the girl and guy when she accidentally panty-shots and suddenly realizes the guy is nearby.

That, and I've been reading a different translation where it's much more obviously about Aikawa's underwear, so that's the idea I've been biased towards already. Sorry, I just don't think Maki saw anything definitive aside from Aikawa's preference for girlshorts or boyshorts.

Hm no, i agree with the poster above me that the author was just trying to show that Maki finally understood Aikawa's umm taste and preferences in underwear. It was only a panty shot (?) after all and wouldn't have shown her gender IMO.
