How about remove a ten based system and replace it with something like they do on those retarded questionnaire portions they tack on to tests sometimes?
1 - Very Bad
2 - Bad
3 - Neutral
4 - Good
5 - Very Good
That's just a very simplified example.

Isn't that pretty much the same thing, but with words instead of numbers?
You'll still get the same problem :/

Bad idea, limits the presicion of the rating, just leave the rating as it is ^^

People should only be able to rate if they've completed the entire series, or for ongoing manga, half of what's put out.
If they read one volume, didn't like it and decided to drop it, let them post a review in the comments section instead.

I think that's a bad idea: But nevertheless it gave me an idea:
On anisearch there was a very interesting rule: Your rating didn't mean much if you haven't watched many episodes. There was also a list of completed/ongoing watch lists. So why don't make something like this, too? Of course there's the danger of it getting abused, but where isn't such a risk?

Isn't the precision of the ratings already screwed up with the influx of 10's and 1's?

Implementing such system is 1. not viable 2. meaningless.
Why it's not viable is already mentioned tons of times already. And even when partial solutions are given, it takes only a second to find 100 ways to exploit it.
It's meaningless b/c it's counter logical to what gathering stats from the public mean. If there is 1% of the voters voting 1 b/c they really dislike it, the effect it has is equivalent for each manga as it is consitently 1%, given sufficiently large sample - which is somewhat on a safety realm by the current bayesian average system. To restrict an option would simply mean all manga's vote is shifted. Thus the total relative score did not change in any direction. Ie, if manga x had higher votes than manga y, x will still be higher than y after the change. If you have a problem with people that simply disagree with you, then that's your problem, it still is an accurate reflection of how many ppl love/hate a certain manga. Just think, if every manga's score bell curved up 10%, would it really have a different meaning?
