This week's poll was suggested by lollylopmr. Do you remember the first series you ever started reading? If so, did you ever finish reading it? If you don't remember, then don't bother voting in this poll, as I specifically didn't put a "I don't know" option

You can submit poll ideas here: https://www.mangaupdates.com/topic/kilkdnn/site-manga-poll-suggestions

Question: Do you intentionally watch bad movies?

Choices:

  • Never - votes: 544 (28%)
  • Rarely - votes: 956 (49.2%)
  • Somewhat regularly - votes: 232 (11.9%)
  • Often - votes: 72 (3.7%)
  • Often enough - votes: 95 (4.9%)
  • Nearly all the time - votes: 25 (1.3%)
  • I only watch bad movies - votes: 19 (1%)

There were 1943 total votes. The poll ended: November 29, 2025

Some bad movies are cult classics

I suppose Doraemon count? I read all volumes of Doraemon series, including the adventure ones.. they're my precious collections in the bookshelf. My brother and I collect them together.

Asides from that, I paused reading Detective Conan and HunterxHunter.

It was either Bleach or Card Captor Sakura. I lost interest in Bleach after they got out of Hueco Mundo? I forgot. This was after months of being irritated at chapters being made up of huge art panels that meant the story barely progressed. I did finish CCS! But not the sequel.

Yes technically

Started with the last three volumes of Cardcapter Sakura Sakura Card arc, then the first volume, then the second volume of the Clow Card arc (or some other volume in the arc), and then the rest of Sakura Card arc in order. And then I read the full series later in order as a teen

When you're A Child, manga takes up only a shelf at the bookstore, and the internet was not widespread, you take what you can get and you don't know any better. And I dare say they somewhat expected that, like television pre-streaming era

I think so? I think it was Marmalade Boy, which a friend was getting from the library and lending to me. Around the same time I read Oh! My Goddess (which I never finished) and Akira (which I did finish and still own and love).

Well, I'm abstaining from voting I guess because I have no idea. I think when I was a kid I got like 1 volume of a pokemon manga but never knew where to get more? Does that count?

I don't remember what my first ever manga was, or even the first when I started reading them regularly, it's just been too long. I did finish some of them, but not all of them; early on I was pretty reliant on buying them when they showed up in barnes and noble or books-a-million, and they'd take forever to come out and often even if it was technically out it wouldn't be in stock, they'd be missing the volume I wanted, plus I'd have to save up my allowance to buy them and it got expensive fast.

I know one of the earlier ones I read was Bleach, and I just got bored of it never ending and how aimless it felt, and frustrated with how long it took for it to be licensed and released in English. I know I finished Fruits Basket, but I don't think it was my first series?

I got better at being able to finish series when I started reading online, but even then a lot of it was waiting for new chapters to be released or the translation to finish, or sometimes it was just dropped and never was finished no matter how long I waited.

i had 3 that i started off with in my school library. i don't remember witch was the true first though. it was either Ranma 1/2, Ah my goddess, or a shojo about 2 twin sister girls that were opposites ( one was genius level smart and the other was crazy athletic). the shojo was competed when i first started, Ranma 1\2 finished wrapped up soon after, and Ah my goddess took years to finish but remember it fondly.

My first series was Doraemon back in elementary school and still rereading sometimes now.

There were some other series which I remember picking up when I was a kid, but couldn't finish for some reasons.

  • Daichouhen Doraemon: I only read the first 16 vols by Fujiko F Fujio himself.
  • Detective Conan: I had been following this for years until I dropped after vol 70 or something. This is getting unnecessarily lengthy.
  • Ouke no Monshou: similar to Detective Conan, getting too lengthy with repetitive rescue missions.

I choose to interpret "first series" as first manga, in which case, it was Love Hina and I did finish it a couple years later! Reading the official volumes, not scanlations back then lmao. Though I read all of Akamatsu's other works via scanlations.

The second manga I ever read, on the other hand, was DNAngel and I gave up on that lmao

Quote from kuroipon

Unironically jealous, the only reason I was able to drop DNAngel is because the months between volumes made it easier to forget about, but I'm incapable of giving up weekly manga once I'm 30 or so chapters in. So I finished Bleach even though I had the same impression as you (and don't worry, it never got better, even though there are some sycophants on reddit who will fight you to the death with revisionism that Bleach was discontinued due to illness/injury instead of being canceled due to literally YEARS of continuously being on the bottom of the popularity rankings. At the time, EVERYONE knew Bleach was canceled).

My first series was Leave it to PET, which was a story about a kid who recycles an orange juice bottle and it comes back as a total pain in the rear. It's great. But I never go to finish it.

The first series I ever actually finished was Kitchen Princess. I cried twice in the school library and my friends called me gay.

Mine was either R.O.D. Read or Die, which was already complete at the time I read it, or Yotsuba& which I (gladly) don't foresee ending before the author leaves this plane of existence lol

My first manga was Jojo part 6, which is completed and i finished. Jojo does have multiple parts and I read part 7 much later. Part 9 is ongoing so idk if saying I finished my first series is true.

Interesting poll idea! I can't say for certain what my first series was but I think it was Absolute Boyfriend - read in the American Shojo Beat, so serialized. I read it as the magazines came out (from the library!) so I believe it took a couple years.
