it also bothers me that most doujinshi are the exact same. i mean for example, from Gintama, most okita x kagura fanartists are female, yet all the smut djs focus on kagura rather than okita. Same with any hetero pairing from snk or psycho pass or hnkna or what-have-you. Why?? i can't think that despite cultural differences or w/e Japanese artists/mangaka wouldn't want to see their husbandos all nakey and stuff. i mean hello... yaoi. lol.

i just don't get it.

There's a lot of attitudes of "men like X, women like Y" in Japan I think, so in the end barely anyone makes female-oriented hentai.

Personally, I'm a straight guy, and even I wish they showed more guys....

Also, you might enjoy Haru Yo, Koi. It's a borderline hentai manga about smutty romance of all sorts, I loved it.

Nodame Cantabile and Udon no Onna come to mind for josei, along with those previously mentioned. They have no actual sex scenes, but the women take a driving role in initiating physical intimacy (especially Nodame).

It's not realistic IMO to expect sexually experienced, assertive girls from shoujo, when the target audience is tween/teen girls who probably haven't had sex yet. Most young girls looking for a sort of 'fairy tale' romance in which they can empathize with the main character are going to prefer a female lead with less romantic experience, and publishing is a business of $$$ and appealing to the largest number of people possible.

Mehh, everyone's got hormones buzzing in them when they're growing up. For 99% of the part, it's just the social stigma that leads to only guys wanting to read hentai. It's a big fat myth that women don't get as horny as men.

If you think about it, is there any other reason why young guys like action movies so much other than it being socially expected? If you look past the surface of it, you realize that they're no more appealing than the comedies or romance or whatever.

I more or less agree (I'm female so yeah, I know that girls are horny beasts 🙂 ) but I'm not sure how my post suggested otherwise. I was just saying that if an author is trying to make a relatable female character for a young target audience, statistically that's not going to be a girl with a lot of sexual experience. That doesn't mean that girls don't get horny or aren't interested in having/seeing sex, just that they're young.

I'll take assertive girls in shoujo even if they aren't experienced at all. Sadly, there is a shortage of them.
I mean, sure a girl doesn't have to behave like she's been with a thousand lovers if she a high school student, but can she be a little more like shounen male leads personality-wise?
Actually that's a really good comparison. Shounen male leads are usually stubborn, willful and hot-tempered, not at all meek, but at the same time they are sexually innocent. It doesn't turn them into doormats. It just means they are somewhat awkward at romance.

Actually, shounen male leads are almost identical to the shoujo female lead templates.

Which is to say, they're extremely average in skill, aptitude and intelligence, and very much the every(wo)man in society. Of course, what makes a completely average teenage male in Japan is somewhat different than what makes a completely average teenage female.

But the general idea is a wish-fulfillment where most readers will have some sense that the story could be about them (no matter how ridiculous the story concept might be).

But they are active and they win at life instead of being dragged through their own story by other characters.
Ichigo (to give a famous example) is a powerful fighter who becomes stronger and stronger and ends up defeating the boss of the week almost every time. Fairy Tail's Natsu Dragneel is bold, reckless and speaks his mind, how often does a shoujo heroine happen to possess those qualities?

Well, if you're talking action series, most like Shoujo Magical Girl series I can think of involve the same kind of monster-of-the-week formula, and the female leads constantly having to charge into episodic conflict.

And...Utena, Kaleido Star...(I'll be honest, I'm actually having to look up which are shoujo and shounen).

There are just as many passive and dragged-along male leads in Shounen, like in almost every single romance/harem/ecchi series.

I know it’s a dead thread, but I relate to this a lot. Especially when the summary makes you think otherwise, like kimi wa pet for example, which was good but the female lead was more passive than I expected. I’ve found methods and techniques to scrape out mangas with dominant females from wherever I can.

I heard chinese mangas have more dominant females but many of them are untranslated. I scroll through iqyi and the chinese bilibili in hope of finding them and they somewhat satisfy me. Take this for example: manhua.iqiyi.com/comic/reader?comicId=285600070
I have to use the translate app on my phone to translate the pictures on my computer, and it isn’t really a top notch translation, but the female lead seems pretty dominant n smirky n I like the blushy male fanservice. I’ve found a good amount of female dominant (to varying degrees) stories by scrolling n viewing the recommendations they gave me. I haven’t read much smut here though. Also, the female leads are more likely to be cruel.

There might be some good korean ones too, but I haven’t checked them out yet in the korean websites. An english translated one is “my secret brother” and I absolutely love how sweet but badass the female lead is and how adorable the male lead is. I expect there might be a lot more now because the feminist movement is getting very popular in korea.

There’s also some good catches in the female dom tag of mangago: https://www.mangago.me/tag/Female%21Dom/?page=1

Mangago is great because most of its content is geared towards females. Lady and maid is my favorite smut manga because the girl is so chill and just screws them without being mean. I’ve also downloaded the otome game it’s based off of. Lady and maid is a korean game, which is another reason why I think there’s a spike in female lead relationships in korean manga.

I also didn’t completely write off hentai, but I think tsumino is a good website to find hot guys in hentai because you can sort by tags and yield better results. Authors like dhibi and female sounding names in the femdom category too. Ehentai is good too but it’s hard to sort through but you can find everything. One that I found was interesting but was not on tsumino was m no honkai by hal, and the female lead handled the hot guy really well. Obviously though since it’s hentai you’re gonna have to scroll through a lot of puke to find gems.

Strangely, japanese otome cds have a lot more submissive boys like the namidame series, though it’s probably because boys sound hot while moaning, which makes the cds easier to sell.

many of the early posts explain it enough for me.
there's a bigger market granting wishes to the inexperienced

filtering through all the dreck which would be 'correctly' tagged, but be a cosmetic/costume dom scene tsk tsk
it should be a bigger thing; self-exploration and all that.
just need a translated manga to go live action to a streaming service and blow up

Yup, it also bothered me a lot , after reading most the mangas I had an eye on (mainly seinen). I skimmed through some shoujo/josei ,but I couldn't bare how girls acted and how most were totally passive in almost every aspect or portrayed a stereotype.

I think the reasons are the editorials, many mangakas and influential people of the industry are endlessly ranting of the western media is corrupting their values with precisely of the stuff you're searching for just like how in the rest of the world some mangas wouldn't de published because of the fear of backlash .

There were some Japanese (manga) artistic movements that went against all this stuff and mainly echi, but they usually end up focusing on two girls and eluding anything close to echi so you never see that part of the relationships. You're probably searching in the wrong media, even thought most Japan's media has old fashioned views there are parts of their society that disagree with this .Check out any novel with a Japanese autor that was accepted world wide and maybe pulling the string from there you'll find things similar to manga.

Otherwise just check French or non-Asian comics/mangakas they usually portray a variety of girls including non passive ones.
