So I'm really pissed because I just moved into my dorm and the school monitors everything you download and will take your internet away if you violate any copyright stuff. So besides the series that get put on onemanga, I can't read (or watch) anything. (And no, I'm not one of those people that only downloads and doesn't pay for any manga. I always buy the manga when it is available here. I just want to read it as soon as it comes out.)

Has anyone else been in this situation? If so, what did you do? Is there a program that can successfully stop logging programs from recording your activity? Did you just download anyway and hope you wouldn't get caught? The obvious extreme would be to set up your own server but college budget won't allow for that.

Off campus wi-fi hotspots ftw.

Im pretty sure you would be able to torrent the stuff and not get caught, and I would assume you can easily get away with just downloading manga anyways. Then again I dont know everything about your situation, so I cant really be positive.

When I was in the dorms for the first two years, I either used direct download, hosting services (mf, rs, mu, etc) or irc (blazing speed on college network).

Assuming his school doesn't block torrents/torrent clients (or most trackers), which is what my school does.

I've never had a problem with DDL/mediafire/etc. sites-I know my school probably logs it all,(and I'm almost positive my lab does) but the network gets so much traffic that unless there's a report/major blockage/etc. it's just not worth it for them to do anything about it. Plus, so much is getting downloaded for legit purposes (my lab's pulled down terabytes over a couple of days) that serious capping would create more problems than it's worth.

Double check, but if IRC isn't filtered at your school, that may work. (I haven't heard of anyone going after people who share files using a chat client.)

If you only follow a handful of series and have a friend who follows the same ones, just get him to change the file name and email you the scans. Nobody's checking email attachments that insanely.

Well even if the school blocks torrents you still get outgoing connections so you can still download stuff, it just takes longer, and you need to go after stuff with more seeds.

But I say that they will probably do nothing unless you just totally abuse the network.

ive been d/l in my dorms for two years with never a hint of trouble. music or tv shows they'll bust you for, but they probably wont know what a shotoko ni hojisama(made up name) is or if it's cpyrighted.

as far as i know, when they "monitor" alls that means is they watch bandwidth for spikes that look like torrents. id guess youd be fine d/l manga, though anime who knows?

I've had no trouble with downloading stuff from the dorms about two years ago, and I had to get an external hard drive to hold more stuff 🙂 . I had no problem with stuff like episodes of Heroes (NBC had to put it in the same time slot as 24), but it may depend on the school, since I went to a pretty big college. I'd follow daed's advice and just not go overkill on downloading stuff.

Most of the time, colleges care more about American movies or music being downloaded. They don't care about some Japanese anime/manga. You're probably safe.

tough luck kid.

this is what i did. Went to a 24hr internet rental shop, played more than a few times and got friendly with the shop assistant. Made a deal that goes this way: shop assistant would download everything i need overnight (or a few days, it depends) and the next day i bring a flashdisk/dvd-r to transfer the files i needed. In exchange, i give him extra bucks/food or more often than not, i play his account on an online game and level up his avatar for an hour or 2.

Thanks guys.

From what I've heard from other dorm members, they're really strict with stuff like Limewire. But I don't know if they've caught on to bittorrent. I have yet to find another anime fan in the dorms so I can't ask any of them if it's safe.

It's a medium sized school but hardly anyone lives in the dorms so it would be easier for them to check everything.

Well, they usually track illegal music download and US movies/shows being broadcasted illegally, I don't think you'll have a problem reading manga; it's not something they look for. However, they can be quite mercenary when it comes to downloading, so you could go to a nearby cafe, there's usually an abundance of them surrounding a university and they offer wi-fi separate from the school server. I moved out after a year of living in the dorms, and am now happily reading my manga with no worries at a student apartment complex (off campus, of course).
I also like to read things as soon as they come out, but I buy my manga once available (gotta support the industry). To whoever said that they can't get a hold of anything interesting in their region, and therefore rely on the web to download series, how about going to an online retail store and getting what you do consider interesting? Will excuses ever cease?....
Overall, living in the dorms is not the greatest feeling, not only is your personal space violated, but you really have no privacy whatsoever, not even online (you can't get away!!). But, it's still something that you should experience... if you really want to read manga that badly, you'll find a way around your dilemma.
