Like most news articles, this one hits the extremes of a trend rather than the normal. Note, for instance, that not all World of Warcraft players lose their jobs and social lives, playing themselves to near death, nor do all video game players become violent psychopaths. "Otaku" are not necessarily perverted, but it sells more papers if you turn 'moe' into nerd lust for children and figurines and (apparently, says this article) an escape from morality.
And this article also inflates the issue sex appeal to attract customers, something that's been common in media of almost all forms forever, into something morally degrading.

the stupid bastard of an author for that article is highly misinformed...
manga and anime is a cultural highlight of japan, and they inspire many other people different nations all over the world to portray their creativity in illustrated stories...the minor sub-division of hentai and ecchi do NOT constitute the values of the whole manga and anime culture...they teach us many things, especially seinen & josei manga, and some of those manga should be adapted to books, since they'll be more respected and welcomed in the world of literature (claymore,etc)...
hentai is to manga as pornography is to the internet...the internet is the highway of information, but on the side of every highway are prostitutes (not my quote)...however, that does not mean that every driver on that path are rich ball-less men, like not all otakus are perverts
the whole business of hello kitty sex toys and dress-up cafe's is due to the marketing & advertising business, making objects on certain designs familiar to the consumers in order to attract customers....that's like mccdonald's strategy of those stupid prizes in the kids' meals....it's an utterly degrading and low blow to the subject being manipulated in order to gain profits >:-(

I LOVED IT! Especially the ending.
“When you see a kid sitting in Borders reading a manga, he’s not just reading a comic book,” Macias said. “There is something really powerful going on there.”
He's not just reading a comic book.... There is something REALLY POWERFUL going on there. You guys feel it too right? The powerful change in us that develops from reading comic books that isn't just comic books. Not sure how much more of this strange power I can take...
Do you know what people did in the old days when they had secrets they didn't want to share?
They'd climb a mountain, find a tree, carve a hole in it, whisper the secret into the hole and cover it up with mud. That way, nobody else would ever learn the secret...

Whoa, I was under the impression that porn was the primary use of the internet...
Anyway, I actually think it's not a terrible article. It's not supposed to be about anime and manga. It's written for MSNBC's "sexploration" column, and is thus obviously trying to explain how anime/manga relates to sex and sexuality while avoiding non-related information. As such I think it does a mostly decent enough job at presenting the sexual aspects of Otaku culture to someone who may be unaware.
Maybe it's just that I'm one of the perverted Otaku the article is talking about.

It does refer to complex. Just like all the other terms ending in "con".

Maybe we should all go and spread the rumors about the "something really powerful going on there". Who knows what the effects are. People might like that too. 🤣

I think that the people who this guy is talking about aren't so much otaku as they are social recluses. That attitude is more evident of being unable to cope in social situations than being interested in figurines.
