How do you name your characters?

I rarely play any games, let alone ones that allow you to name your character. I typically go for random, so long as it's somewhat fitting. The last game I made good names for was a text-based MMORPG (called Dragon Realms) over 15 years ago 🤣
Baylocke! I used to go on a search engine (I think it was AOL back then, lol) and search for names I thought up and would use the first one I liked where no results came up. I think he was a barbarian. There was also a thief I had with the title of a bard, and his name was Luter (as in the instrument lute, but also as in one who steals looter). Thieves could use titles of other guilds, like empaths, clerics, bards, paladins, etc.
Any names I've come up with since then were either childish (an ice mage named Chill'em after the pot pipe, an alchemist named Pharma, etc) or kind of generic (a thief named Bilbo Badass, a paladin named Justiss, etc).
-No longer do I quote great scholars, the famous, etc. Kids feigning wisdom ruined it.
--I wont type a post like a college report. If you don't read it just for that reason, you don't have to post why your hoity-toity ass refused to. I swear, so many people on this site are so full of themselves. A lot seem to think they always have an "intelligent and/or logical" point or show signs of a superiority complex. They never admit they're wrong. Maybe partially, but excuses abound! :\
-Stop mailing me about my comments. I don't read them.

I tend to name my game characters a bit weirdly imo.. I usually take some kind of defining characteristic of the class be it from skills, race, weapons. Then using freedict/google translate find a name in japanese that I like. I usually tend to pick names that are short. In fact Tobuay my handle comes from Wolf's Rain back when there was no MAL. Of course now I know its Toboe.
Tobuay was also my first mmo names!
Everquest Online Adventures: Frontiers! Male Elf Mage! Castle Lightwolf Server! 😀
There hasn't been a game like it for me since hoping the new everquest is better though

I have a really hard time naming my characters to be honest. It takes about 30 minutes to come up with a name I like. Usually, they tend to be asian names but I also lean towards western ones when the setting of the game seems fitting for it. When all else fails, I just make my brother choose a random one. 😛
Same name(s) across different games. Namely Auron for men and Jill for women if i don´t get to select a name. He isn´t favorite Square character (still in the top 5) but the name is perfect for a distinguished warrior and she is my favorite games heroine. My male characters always get as many of my features as possible and more games need to allow you to select the female hair set options for the men too. The real Auron also had long hair. Like a boss!
MY PSN name is resident-grigo and my Xbox name is my tried and true MU handle without the - . Feel free to look up my astronomical gamer tag / Trophy numbers.

I either use the same name, or take an hour to think of something else. I always used to use Quar or something similar (anything with a Q) for men. I use Lia for female characters, and recently Liana. Nowadays the male character gets something that rhymes with Tingle (Dingle or Bingle), or something worse. Picking serious names is really hard...Sometimes I end up restarting the game a few times and try to pick a better name. 🤣

I cook up a name based on the kind of character I'm building. Gender, Race, Class (maybe subclass as well), Skill specializations, Intended background, Type of deity worshipped, etc. Just, something creative and nice sounding.

I started using common names and then I got as random as possible. I still remember the glorious times of Edmlmon and Letno the Totodile.
My current top 3:
Fullmetal Alchemist
Pandora Hearts
3-gatsu no Lion
Same across all game, rather, same on everything that requires a 'nickname' or 'codename/username' etc,
All are KnightzOmegaz (had been 3 years since I started using this name), even before that
AFAIK(remember), I had been fixated on 'Knight' ever since I played Suikoden or any other RPG games during my childhood
I normally just use a random, common Japanese name such as “ Sakura ” or “ Konata ” and add a surname that I like.
For example I once made a character on a RPG site, and I used the name “ Kaede Horimiyu ” for the character. The name was pretty uncommon and random xD

Different name for every game.
I'm leaving default when the character is created for you (already has an identity) and you're just seing the story through his/her eyes e.g Zelda's Link will always remain "Link", same with Final Fantasy characters.
But if you're given more freedom in creating your character (like in BioWare games), then I'm always changing it - this way I feel that this character is truly mine 🙂 I mostly go for sth related to race/class/personality type I'm playing - I google translate the words into various languages and choose the one that sounds nice (and maybe tweak it a bit).

If the character already has a default name, I stick with that. If I have to come up with one myself, I am fairly random.

If there's a canon name (except like pokemon/digimon/fire emblem) I typically use that, but the rest of the time I use a range of names such as; Dad, Post-It Note, Seat Belt, USP Tact. .45mm
I may not be the best at names...

Totally random. People tell me I‘m not creative but I shine when naming MMO characters xD Most of those names make no sense and won‘t have results when googling them. Latest random brain dice: Tingale for BDO.
