I mean... Recently its like EVERYONE has been using gmail.

What makes it so great?

I got gmail while it was still in beta years back (2003 or 2004... Forgot exactly when) during the early invite times, and it wasn't as popular. It is my main email address, but I only switched to it because I didn't like hotmail and was too lazy to register somewhere else. But now its like... EVERYONE uses it.

What made it so popular?

Maybe because most people are using google now instead of Yahoo? And probably cause it loads quicker?

I've favoured Gmail for a few years. I just like the layout and it loads nice and quick.

Been using it ever since I got that so called "special" invite... way before the beta... was buggy back then, but it's probably the most polished of all the mass-market free e-mail account providers today.

It's probably more of an image thing.
Google is generally seen by the masses as cooler than Yahoo and less evil then Microsoft (Hotmail).

For those who aren't good with computers, it's easier to set up POP3 e-mail forwarding to open source/3rd party e-mail clients (ie. non MS Outlook) like Thunderbird and Evolution.

The minimal (and text only) adverts were always a plus. And when I started using it, it was the only one that had lots of memory.

When it started, it was the only mail to offer enough space that you didn't have to delete emails. At this point a lot of people stick with it because out of all the major free emails, its site goes down by far the least.

Yeah, I've had it since the invite years. I've been using it so long, it just seems stupid to switch. I don't even remember any other email address I had. 😐

Other than that, the reason I probably use it is because my inbox has over 4000 emails in it, and I still am only using about 2% of my space.

Gmail practically made those "pay-to-use" email services obsolete. Back when other email services had 2mb capacity (that's right, TWO megabytes), gmail had 1GB from the get-go. Why did you think Yahoo and Hotmail increased their storage capacity so fast? It's not because they love you. Yahoo went from 4MB to 2GB in a span of one year (2004-2005). This goes the same for attachment size (from 1mb now it's 10mb). 2005 was such an interesting year seeing hotmail and yahoo desperately improve their services to catch up to gmail. competition is a very good thing.

Gmail also has a "search" feature within your emails when no other service had. It has a spam filter that actually works even from the start. You get so many new features practically every month, and thanks to gmail labs, it's still constantly improving. The interface is simple and uncluttered. And remember, before gmail, POP3 was a paid service everywhere else.

I hate it. My roomates loved it since the get go and were into the hype and such. But I never really needed it.

Dunno why. Of course I hate hotmail even more, but I had already switched to yahoo before it got big, and I've kept yahoo as my main one since.

aww. I know what you are saying. But I'm actually a huge Hotmail fan.Hotmail was my first email....

Because I hate hotmail is the reason i got it 🤣

I got in like, 2003. So I needed one of those 'special invite' things. Used it ever since. It's convienient for me because google is my home page, so I can log in, have a nice igoogle page, and check my emails without having to go directly into my inbox. I also have other things on my igoogle page that I like to check everyday 🙂

Although I get a hell of a lot of spam (I think thats because i've signed up for so much stuff with that email XD) it doesn't affect me because it goes into the spam box and deletes itself after a while.

I also have a yahoo account but I never bother to check it. It's my 'formal' one i guess XD

But mainly it's extremely convienient for me.

Why is it more popular in the past couple years?

Probably because you no longer need to beg someone for one of their invites! 🙄

Gmail is awesome!

When I was applying for vacation work and graduate positions, I needed an email address that was professional, not childish like my existing hotmail address. So I checked out gmail and found that I could insert a full stop between my first and last name, which I thought looked much better than an underslash. Plus 'gmail' looks better on a resume than 'hotmail' does. 🤣
Gmail also makes attaching documents quicker and easier.

I know that recently, and for the better, hotmail updated its services to match those of gmail. But I still prefer gmail if I want my emails to look 'professional' (e.g. when applying for jobs) because it never attaches those nasty little ads at the bottom of emails like hotmail does.

I have gmail solely for the purpose of my AP English class that I ended up not taking (I took a college class instead) because we had discussion board stuff, but I use yahoo...mostly because everybody knows my yahoo account and not my gmail account.
