Although I like gmail and all, but I don't really see much of a difference. I'm too used to hotmail, but I don't see why it is so important to have so much space on a e-mail account. I find the 5gb hotmail gives you is efficient enough because you probably won't be sending large files and even if you tried you can't pass the 10mb limit. I'll make the switch to gmail officially when I find the need though.

Chrome.
Google products. How many of those do you actually use? @_@
I like gmail because of the layout (It's simpler and easier on the eyes! ^_^) and the way it displays the email in conversation form.
And about using gmail because it's popular... That's silly! ^_^ You shouldn't change your opinion about something because of other peoples' opinions! Be it you hate something because it's popular, or liking it because it's popular! XD

Like other people said, it's the first email service that provides large amount of space, which is one of the reasons why I signed up way back when. Also the design interface is simple and fuss-free, making it easier for users to navigate.
Personally, I like Gmail for the simple fact that you don't have to click on refresh to see new mail when you have the Inbox page open. I don't know if Hotmail has that kind of thing now, but they didn't when I was still using it.

ah, another plus on google:
you never have to delete mail. ever. i have 2000+ nonspam email (stuff i signed up for and thought i'd check) and they just keep making more room. i think i still have my very first received email in there. dunno if that's the same for others though, i never really check. but it's still nice.

I mean... Recently its like EVERYONE has been using gmail.
What makes it so great?
I got gmail while it was still in beta years back (2003 or 2004... Forgot exactly when) during the early invite times, and it wasn't as popular. It is my main email address, but I only switched to it because I didn't like hotmail and was too lazy to register somewhere else. But now its like... EVERYONE uses it.
What made it so popular?
- Constantly growing mail space - you don't have to bother with deleting any e-mails, you'll never fill it 😛 (of course I'm not considering your friends sending you warez movies, etc. via mail)
- Gmail manager for firefox makes it easy to check.
- Grouping e-mails - I don't see 3 thousands e-mail notices (about new pm, etc.) in row anymore 😛
- It's free.
- No advertisements added to your mails.
- No spam-advertisements mails (at least not from google itself).
- Correctly named "previous/next" arrows (so many portals has "previous" for newer e-mail and "next" for older messages... - makes you click the wrong one most of times)
Well, there's probably much more but that's what comes to mind now.
You can PM me if you need a temporary (freelance) cleaner/redrawer for some project. Especially if it's something with nice art.
Being the lazy person that I am, I'm not likely to accept anything long-term though.
