Justin Lin Courted For "Akira" Remake
Warner Bros. Pictures have spent a long time developing a live-action feature adaptation of the acclaimed manga and its subsequent 1988 anime feature "Akira". Several different filmmakers have been attached at different points including Stephen Norrington, Gary Whitta, Albert Hughes, Ruairi Robinson, and Jaume Collet-Serra.
Now a new name has been added to the list. Speaking to Meet The Movie Press, The Wrap writer Jeff Sneider says the studio is keen on "Fast Five" helmer Justin Lin to direct the project.
At last report Marco J. Ramirez had been hired to pen a new draft of the script late last year, one that could be the beginning of a film trilogy.

I know the article says that the reason production is paused so that the director can prioritize Thor 4, but I highly doubt that would require putting the film "on hold indefinitely". Either the project is turning out to be down-right terrible, or WB doesn't have any confidence in this film. Or both.
The film is doomed and barely stood a chance to be made under Mr. Thor. He is just too headstrong. Yet too much money was spent over the last 2 decades to let this rest. Sunk cost fallacy and all of that.
Look forward to another producer-driven Production Hell escapee in the vain of GitS 2017 one of these days. Alita was ok... I guess but even that one (seemingly) failed to break even despite Mr. Titanic being hands-on. There is another reason for WB pulling the plug. AT&T bought them last year and someone was smart enough to see that the ground is currently salted for big-budget sci-fi manga films. That person will be gone one day and that´s when the next troubled production will start.
