the purpose of any living beings is to live long enough to reproduce children...in order to make the process appealing to the body, hormones are release to trigger an emotion calls "love"...i suppose "happiness" is obtained after he/she has managed to go through the process and produce a child/children, seeing that one's purpose in life is completed at that moment
i suppose monks aren't that cheerful
but that's just my scientific concept of obtaining "happiness"...as long as you don't inflict unwanted damages to other people, you should pursuit whatever physical/psychological object of your happiness is

In our pursuit of happiness, exactly whose desires are we struggling to fulfill? We are taught from early on what is worth struggling for in a normal society... But beyond our basic needs for survival, the rest are fabricated and ultimately useless. We can derive happiness from these things... normally... but I personally seem to have fallen into a state where knowing the ultimate uselessness of everything, I can not find happiness in most of what many others can.
But I do not consider myself depressed as such, since living itself fills me with contentedness, sometimes even joy. And sometimes simply having my senses stimulated by the most seemingly mundane things can get me excited and smiling. Feeling the texture of a wooden table, the cool smooth surface of a porcelain wash basin, the sun toasting my back, the darkness playing tricks with my eyes, the smells and tastes of delicious foods and other fragrant things...
...uh... where was I?
We are not bound by any means to anything, this life is your only life, have fun... you decide what that is.
