The only reason I like Tokyopop is because they're the only way I can get Tokyo Tribes 2.

Tokyopop has not made a serious bid at licensing any major series in the past several years. Probably their last best series as far as sales go, Fruits Basket, is coming to an end soon, and for the most part they have not kept up with what's hawt in Nippon. No, don't say Battle Vixens/Ikkitousen, I'm not sure if they were even translating the series right, their release of that series reads like a satire with incessant dirty jokes. I hope someone out there scanlates this series, I've already given up on Tokyopop's work on it.

This transition to online sales only for certain titles is an indication of poor sales in major bookstore chains. I wouldn't be surprised if they suddenly just stop selling stuff, just like the phase out of their DVDs. Ah well, good riddance to bad rubbish, but they oughtta put out all of Fruits Basket first before you kick that corporate bucket. 😀

Although I agree with bad sales, I doubt tokyopop will collapse the same way others have recently. Hell, for all the crap they throw at the market they managed to survive three media changes. They are like the Playstation of the manga world. Lots of crap, but out of every hundred or so titles they manage to pull out a hit. In this kind of market of dwindling sales, tokyopop selling things only online sounds like a good idea. Since they don't have to market the book at the store or worry about flooding the market with something someone doesn't want, they can spend that money on some other book that might have gone unlicensed. Like Aria. I'm not saying thats what happened, but it very well could have. Now if only they'd spend their money on something like a decent translator, so we don't get another Ikkitousen repeat.

cough Sorry 'bout that rant. I'm not sure that it was constructive. But damn, ever since they axed the 'dirty jokes' out of "GTO" and promised remove potential 'lesbian' content from "Sailor Moon", they've been on my bad side. When I series gets licensed I generally drop the scanlations and buy the official volumes (even if I'm also buying the Japanese tanks), but not if TokyoPop picks it up.

Screw 'em.

So they axed the 'dirty jokes' out of GTO. Damn, i was planning on buying the whole thing. Is it still worth the buy?

This is hardly news. Tokyopop did this before over a year ago with two no-name titles.

No worries people. 😀

I've never really liked Tokyopop anyway. I just hate the way they format the covers of the manga. And they miss spell some things sometimes. Which bothers me a lot.

why are people so against certain publishers? I mean only those publishers have the titles in your country right so that means if you don't wanna pay extra for imports you're forced to buy from them anyway. I could care less which publisher it's from as long as I get my goddamn manga 😛

No surprise. -_-; I thought they've been like that since a long time ago.

I use to like them a lot during their MIxx (pre-adding more stuff to their magazine besides manga) days. But then, years have passed and they kept constantly changing to a point where they have gone completely mainstream. Their website even reflects the changing.

I still like them for certain titles because it's the only way I can support the mangakas. But....I'm in with the crowd of Del Rey and Viz over TP any day. ^^; Quality > Quantity of titles
