The "You decided not to finish this series"

Yes, but there is also some updates that you haven't browsed yet and may be willing to try or at least put it on the wish list.
So yes, the distinction between not read and choose not to read is still necessarily cause you still need to add the series to the wish list but you are wasting your time on clicking the series that are not marked thinking that you haven't read them to put them on wish or read list eventually just to find that you actually read them before and found them unsatisfying and dropped.
I do not see how the feature of showing the chose not to finish mark would be bad. You are not keeping the track on the manga's that you have dropped but rather keeping mark on the ones that you haven't noticed before and the fact that it gets updates may encourage you to try it.

I had a similar suggestion a while back. here is the link:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=5347&hl=blacklist
I didn't have the ability to defend it though. It seems like this is now getting attention. I gave up on that idea since a number of people seem to be so fond of the vague "Unfinished List", I'm not. I really didn't figure out its use until after I posted the above suggestion. Unfinished list is too ambigous. It could mean "did not finish reading because there were no scans yet for three years", "did not finish reading because It outside my genre", "did not finish reading because I'm waiting for it to be completed since I want to read nonstop". It's just too subjective. Since there are really differing views. I came up with the idea to suggest the ability of a user to create his own list (link below)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=5716&hl=custom%20list
Although it was said there that my idea was not new and there had been plenty of topics/request for that. (Glad to know.)
The point is. There are tons of titles to keep track of. Can you remember the titles that you've read 10 years ago? Especially the ones you didn't even bother to read 5 chapters? Come on. Now maybe you'll want to remember. To read 15 chapters of a title just to remember that you've read it 10 years ago and game up at that same point will make you pull your hair out. Also, would you bother to add a title that you've read for like 5 minutes and gave up to your reading list just to move it to the unfinished list? This alone makes the unfinished list something that needs a review. maybe make a poll?

Indeed, it seems like a self-clear thing to do, yet no one did this yet. Well hopefully it will be done in the future to make things easier and more comfortable to follow (specially concerning the latest release list).
@NightSwan, yes I do speak russian. Do you?
Nya^^ Yes, I do speak russian (that was cleared though. So just for the sake of answering :haha 🙂
Shame that Manick is busy... Us lazy people really need comfort 🤣
But I don't mind waiting.

However, the problem with unfinished list still continues as in you still do not see an unfinished mark in the release page.
I started using a 'complete' mark for the series I decided not to finish just so I could see them marked on the release page and would not confuse with others.
Sounds silly, but the unifinihed list so far is pretty much useless.
The reasonw hy use complete mark for your unifinihed mangas are simple -
-
You can see the mark on the releases page so you can ignore it and not mix it with the ones you haven't read yet
-
You dont have to bother to move a manga you chose not to finish to move to any of your list then go to that list and move it to unfinihed one. It's too bothersome. Beter when you can select an option right on that manga page.
So, as far as i see, manga-updates should either make the unfinihed list more useful or simply do not use that feature at all since so far it is pretty lame when we compare it to other lists.

It's supposed to be lame compared to other lists, it's the reject list after all.
I don't see the point of having a little sign next to something I don't want to deal with anymore, I spent enough time putting it to the unfinished list because I felt it was crap up to the point where I've read it and not worth reading ever again. It doesn't serve a direct benefit in the list itself but in the series info page you can see how many people thought the series is crap and shouldn't be continued with (like the 138 for naruto).
I only read what I'm interested in so if it's something I've read before and hated it I probably won't read it again even if I click on it by accident.
Finally, you don't have to move it to an existing list if you want to put it to your unfinished list. Just go to the unfinished list to input it manually with add series. A simple copy & paste isn't that labour intensive.

Well, to follow your line of reasoning, you feel that looking at a sign next to an unfinished series is a waste of time.
For others, actually clicking the link of said series, and then seeing that it's on their unfinished list, is an even bigger waste of time. Maybe you can recognize series you've decided not to finish by just looking at its title (in all its various forms) but not everyone can do that.

Thats what I mean as well.
How is it a waste of time to see the sign of unfinished? How does it takes your time?
Now what really does take away your time is when you click on the series that you think you havent read them in hopes on putting it on wish or read list but then you see that it is actually unfinished one.
greydrak, then why creating a list that is pretty much useless? It is what, makes you feel better that you know that there is actually a useless list around that you will never have much use off anyway?
Please explain it to me how does it takes your time to see an icon near it? Or moreover hopw does it takes more time to see it rather than clicking on it just to find it was on unfinished list anyway? I do not see the logic in your argument at all since if we would use this time wasting argument then putting a icon on unfinished manga would surely win over not putting it on as this way you would actually waste less time.
You do understand that some people read many mangas that they cannot keep a track on even if they hated them? So how does a useless clicking helps in that?
And you are talking about labor...How about you not using baka-updates at all and just go through the actual sites? It is not that much of labor either, specially if you have some manga's that you like... It is not about the labour it is about convenience, baka-updates are more convenient to use but so should be the list making.
Tell me how would it hurt you to make a site more convenient? Would it make your hands bleed if you would have to do less clicking?
It is a question of convenience and so far the unfinished list is rather inconvenient to use, making a valid questioning about its purpose whatsoever.

I think a method that would be better suited to the "I have no interest in EVER reading this again" mindset would be the ability to filter out specific series in the same way you can filter genres.

Well you can actually see an icon of unfinished in the manga list, the argue we have here is that the same icon is needed on the releases page as well.
Now if the manga that is on your unfinished list would filter out and not be shown in the releases page then of course the icon would be useless.
But for the moment we have both mnagas that are marked as unfinished and mangas that are not marked yet the same, and you have to question the sanity of those who think that the unread manga = the manga that you chose not to to read anymore.
For me it is obviously different and if it is different why it should be marked as the same?

I think icon for "the manga that you chose not to to read anymore" are useful on the release page
The reason is I click at every release of the day (so I won't miss new project). And there are many manga that "I have no interest in ever clicking at it again" (shounen ai; yaoi; etc... Sorry but i don't mean to offense anyone)
The icon on the release page will be pretty convenient 😀

So far it seems we have much more votes "for" than against and I haven't even seen any really reasonable argument "against" really.
I do remember the short time when the icon was shown on the releases page but for some reason this feature got disabled later. I guess they used the same rather doubtful logic of "not keeping an eye on the unfinished manga" argument which is invalid...

i'd be for darknemo's idea, since i'm a pretty forgetful person and if i initially choose to look at a specific type of series but find it pretty bad, i'll completely shove the memory of it out of my mind... and then sometime later i'll accidentally wander back to it by means of the release page, seeing that it's in the range of my preferences on the outside. but this is only a slight inconvenience. if it's too much of a hassle to deal with i wouldn't push it.

so, any news regarding the issue here or will it be left the same way, I wonder?

The biggest problem I see here is that users don't have a common definition for the term Unfinished. So here's my definition:
Unfinished = I started reading it, then I decided never to finish it. In other words, I dropped the series with no plans to resume it.
I like the idea of the Unfinished flag being visible globally on the site. In fact, I would like all my flags to be visible globally on the site, as long as it's practical.
The secondary problem, IMHO, is that some users want a completely separate list and flag for series which they intend to never read. Such a list would be the opposite of the Wishlist. Perhaps that new list might be called a Blacklist:
Blacklist = I am not reading it, and I never wish to read it. In other words, I never want to start reading the series.
As for me, I have no need for a Blacklist, because I see no point in keeping lists of things I don't want. Even so, I would not object to such a feature being implemented provided it does not adversely affect the functionality of the site.

I absolutely agree with Telengard about the "unfinished" definition. And if we decide you drop it aka "you decide not to finish this," why would people care if dropped series it shows up in the updated release page. To counter that, I think OP's other idea of making the symbol visible there will help users save time and avoid it.
Lastly, I would like to say I still strongly support the idea to allow users to add series onto the "unfinished" list directly on the info page because it's really a fantastic idea. It would help keep lists organize and help users remember which series they've dropped (because people are usually too lazy to go all the way to the list page, scroll down, find then transfer as much as people like to keep things "neat"...).
