x number of posts

I have noticed a trend now where some scanlators ask you post x number of posts before you can download a release or wait 3 to 4 days for some one else to host it before you can download. I mainly see this in the shoujo genre probably because that's what I generally read but I don't see the shounen manga scanlators who scan Bleach, Naruto, Gantz, One piece etc doing that.
Is this something unique to the shoujo world?
If so, why is that? 😕

No of course not. Out of the top of my head a shounen one that has this is Mx0. Also there are some sites that have shounen and shoujo manga which require posts to download like evil genius.
Anyways learn how to use mIRC and the problem will be solved.

Not always. Pretty much all the sites that do this that i've experienced is for shoujo manga, and the groups usually don't have an IRC channel. I think one of the reasons for doing the posts thing is to get comments from us, and get us talking... As much as i would want to - i almost always haven't read the series yet (i'm just a leeching till it's done and feel in the mood for reading), i don't have the time or patience to join a forum, posts the required amount, find the password, and repeat for another group. I find the process a bit tedious and puts me off, usually waiting till it appears elsewhere.

I guess I wouldn't know because I'm not a huge shoujo fan, although I do read and enjoy some of them.
Regarding IRC, you can find almost all your manga because you can just take it from random people using !list, bots or whatever.

Yeah learning irc would be a big help in finding manga. Trying to hunt down working http links doesn't always guarantee a result, but you can find most releases on the scanlators irc channel, minus licensed stuff sometimes. *
*seem i'm diverging away from the topic and on to how to download manga >_< - back onto topic :-)
Oh! I know! just totally hate that! It's annoying after a while.....

especially for a lurker like me who like to read it as soon as new releases out
zero time lag if necessary 😛

Those scanlators just want to get you talking/save bandwith/hide their manga. Finding manga has been much easier since I figured IRC out.
I've seen this for shoujo and shounen mangas. The thing is that some shounen mangas are so popular, there's more than one scanlator doing it. And people will just keep looking for scanlators instead of posting.

I've only ever had this happen maybe once or twice. And the few times I remember, I only had to register, I didn't have to post at all. Though maybe one of them required one post... but that's no big deal. Nothing to fuss about.

IRC is not hard.... really.
I can go online just for you if you want to learn 😃 (I'm voiced, and I've taught some before)
It's a little annoying, but otherwise the groups would get swamped with nameless leechers. It's been a while since I've gone to a specific groups website for manga (aside one or two with really fast direct downloads), I'll just use mass manga collection/download sites nowadays, or IRC when I'm desperate.
I can imagine the idea blowing up in a group's face when most of the people on their forum don't actually care and just want their downloads, lot's of spam, etc.

I use IRC and I'm a lurker myself. I can generally find the manga that I want. I agree it does get a bit tedious at times.
Has the focus shifted from just scanlating something you think others like to the groups demanding gratitude for something they decided to do on their own?

Because people who host shoujo mangas are mainly women.. and you know how some female are pretty strict with rules and stuff. When males tend to not really care and just suck it up. so yeah :] i think.

Well, it's not unique to the shoujo world, apparently.
But, the reason some/one group makes people wait x number of days before distributing it is to get more traffic and so they'll know who the scanlator is. They don't ask anyone to post anything, so it's not for gratification.

What ticks me off is groups that hold back releases to get more donations/posts/whatnot. Yes, I've only come across one that does that, but that's enough to set me off.
