I enjoyed Hana no Name, I felt that the male lead is realistically attractive. He's not hideous but not sparklysparkly* ikemen type. He wears glasses and has shaggy hair. I think the story fits what you are looking for. It's about the male and female lead who both have some problems dealing with reality and tendency to isolate themselves and get depressed, but they start to learn about how to live when they get together.
