Quote from ZettaiFujoshi

Guess Efron as Light is better than Bieber as Light.

Heck, anyone, even Efron would be better than Bieber. = _ =

I don't know. Efron has shown himself to be a decent actor.

Quote from kawaiiairbender

Personally I dislike Death Note so I don't care but I love to hear the righteous indignation of anime fans.

Well, you've come to the right place, then.

This is literally the worst news I've heard since my grandmother died 14 years ago. (to be absolutely clear, that news was worse, but this news is still worse than anything else that's happened in those 14 years).

People seem to be forgetting is that the Japanese live action movies were baaaad. Really bad. That said, this sounds to be even worse (mainly because they seem to be fundamentally misunderstanding the nature of the story. A lot of the people involved were quoted (albeit years ago) as saying they were considering toning down how evil Light is [and even making him the hero!]. The script was also written by some guy who writes tons of hollywood movies, including the upcoming fantastic four reboot, so I question whether all this can add up to a good gritty psychological horror film.)

The one (potential!) saving grace is the director. Apparently its some fellow called Adam Wingard who directs horror movies. Has anyone seen any of his films, and can you say if they were any good?

Some website called dailydot.com (never heard of it. Is it trustworthy?) is saying that Zac Efron will NOT be starring as Light: http://www.dailydot.com/geek/death-note-movie-adam-wingard-director/

No, Zac Efron is not starring as Light Yagami, the model teen whose angelic face masks a megalomaniacal sociopathy that finds its perfect companion when he chances upon a "death note"—a book that kills whoever's name is written in it, in the manner of the author's choosing. No, Gus van Sant is not coming on board as director. No, the leaked script that surfaced in 2011 is not the one currently in production, and the demon Ryuk, who gives Light the Death Note, will not be written out of the final version.

The newest script by Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four) will restore many of the elements in the source material. With indie horror veteran Wingard at the helm, and with a production team that now includes die-hard anime fan Masi Oka of Heroes fame, things may actually be looking up for this dark, modern morality tale.

Some sources are also saying the script may be re-written by someone called Simon Barrett who wrote a lot of Wringard's other movies.

Warners' Live-Action Death Note Film Casts Rainey Qualley

Deadline Hollywood reported on Thursday that actress and singer Rainey Qualley will play the female lead in Warner Brother's planned Death Note film. Her character's name has not yet been revealed.
Qualley joins Nat Wolff, who plays the lead male character. Wolff's character's name has also not yet been revealed, but Variety describes him as "a student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone simply by writing the victim's name." Variety also mentions that he will compete with a "reclusive police officer."
Production is slated to begin spring 2016.
Adam Wingard (The Guest, You're Next) has signed on to direct the film and Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four) penned the most recent draft of the script.

Edit:

Update: Deadline updated its article to report that Margaret Qualley, not her sister Rainey, is in negotiations to star in the film.
