Suggestion: Content Rating System

I would like to suggest the addition of a Content Rating system to the site.

Previously I had noticed a number of categories such as Rated A, rated Y, Rated T etc, but those have disappeared, and I think that we should consider implementing a system as a separate field.

There are three ways we could implement this

  1. Devise our own system,
Pros - We define the categories
Cons - There could be quite some debate as to the appropriate rating for some series.
  2. We implement an existing system such as the Tokyopop System,
Pros - The system is already defined, and for some systems has already been applied to a number of series.
Cons - The system could be changed by the implementor at any time.
  3. We implement a system that allows the addition of multiple rating systems.
Pros we can have rating systems used in different countries
Cons This is the most complicated of the three.

Tokyopop's system.

The big question: why? How do you figure a ratings system would be helpful?

Personally, I think you can get a basic idea of where the rating would fall if you examine the genres/categories, so I don't see a need for ratings.

Also, (e.g.) TokyoPop's ratings are meant for the buying public, where there's ideally some control over what's available to whom. On Baka-Updates, it would be nothing more than an empty honor system. I mean, if you're concerned enough about a rating in the first place, I think you might be just as motivated to check over the genres and categories in lieu of a rating. Otherwise there's not a thing that'll stop anyone from finding whatever sparks their interest (short of lack of availability).

And then there's the fact that, if you've seen those labels on this site before, but don't see them now, there's probably a good reason they were taken away. Again, if you're going to hope to convince anyone, I think a "why" would be very helpful for your position.

This is also an english-language rating system. I think genre tags like adult or mature makes it easy to gauge the contents.

I do not know why the Rated categories where removed, I have search Announcements and found no mention of them being removed.
I used Tokyopop's system as an example of an existing system because it would be familiar to quite a few people here. I could have easily used Marvels system, See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Rating_System
Using a combination of Genre and Categories might sound ideal, however it presents a number of difficulties, apart from the standard one of what if there are no entries for categories or genre, For example look at Ranma 1/2. If I look at the Genres and Categories I would be hard pressed to tell who I would be happy to read it.

Personally I find the Adult and Mature genres are very closely aligned, practically anything that is described as Mature could also be described as Adult, however there are some works which are described as Mature which I would be happy to allow a Fifteen year old read, whilst others I would prefer to restrict to someone who is over Eighteen.

Again we come up against the question, "What does it matter?" Let me phrase it a bit differently. What do you hope to get out of this? If such a rating system were on Baka-Updates, how would you use it?

For me at least, I can figure out where most things are but when i suggest things for younger children, middle schoolers or even teens it would be useful. Then i wouldn't have to spend loads of time searching for something appropriate for a 12 year old.

there have been a couple times when i've been surprised though.

I think the genre and category tags are enough to inform readers of what the content in a series is like. Examples would be smut, mature, hentai, borderline hentai, etc.
