With OneManga's fall, I wondered if it would a better solution have an online reading website that was legal with a monthly subscription fee so the publishers do make money. Now tell me, would you subscribe for it and for how much would you be willing pay? Thought I do hope the publishers will fail. What do you think would be a better solution if not this one and exlain why please.

i wouldn't pay to read manga online, if they sold anything other than naruto,one piece or dragonballs where i lived i would have bought the books instead, but sadly they dont and shipping fee's are a bitch 😔

Dude, thats already happening, Mangahelpers made the OPENMANGA proyect, and its a LEGAL online reading web... things have been talked with japanese and english publishers and even lots of famous mangakas and they are in favor of the site... the only thing i hope its that they make things CHEAP so i can read +300 mangas at easy with my monthly payment

This entire issue over paying for manga online is incredibly frustrating. Argue however you want, but the meat and potatoes of the US manga industry is largely made by free online distribution of scans, be they pirated or otherwise. Manga is a niche market the industry constantly struggles to reach, and target buyers are unconsciously promoted to by easily-accessed downloadable chapters. Publishing everywhere is affected by the internet, but the solution isn't to block out online accessibility or even piracy (manga isn't movies, music or tv, no one loses advertising dollars) by targeting fan communities -- that'd be like making alcohol illegal and inadvertently driving bigger criminal activity (people are going to drink alcohol no matter what). It's a cheap band-aid method to smarter models.

It's the internet. People will always get material free, eventually, given the difficulty of regulating technology. Instead of trying to control and block out online distribution entirely, there should be some liquidity or co-operation between online fandom comms that make access to manga available and publishers. A compromise, like gathering advertisers and offering manga titles free (rough example), is the only reliable way publishers can utilize the global PR-power of the internet while turning some dough.

That said, the manga industry's clumsiness and stubborn dedication to failing models have turned me off buying anything for good. I call it a boycott, even.

This reading manga online stuff does not work for me.

I prefer fullscreen and sometimes offline viewing.

I see, so lets say they do allow you to download it, sort of like a iTunes thing, with the exception of unlimited downloads being applied to it. How would you consider that possiblity?

Nope, if I could pay per read, maybe. Not monthly, that'd be stupid since I don't read much manga, definitely not a month's worth in even a year.

I will pay but the problem is, they dont even license or translate half of the mangas I read. Only the mainstream popular mangas are licensed. So if the legal site hosts all the scans like One Manga and Toshokan had, and not just the few that are published, then, only then will I be willing to pay. Because scanlators work on alot of different mangas not just the mainstream ones, I guess what I m trying to say is, if the legal online reading site has as vast a manga library as what One Manga or Toshokan used to have, then I will be willing to pay.

Of the stuff I read only a small fraction ever hits US shores, and when it does, I've already long since read it. This is why the US manga industry is a joke.

Ummm..that's not true and i don't know were you read that.

They are working on it but it won't have well known manga. You are talking about one of their older projects where they sent a letter to the some publishers and their propositions were rejected.

Also, if it's legal it won't have scanlators, right? It would have payed editors. How many people do you think they can hire for a website like that? 10, 20? One editor per manga?

Will these so called legal translations be up to date?

Basically... I won't have to wait for awhile for them to catch on the scanlators.
