Security Cameras
okay...
is anyone slightly in the least bit creeped out about the alarming rate of security camera that have been popping up lately?(er-well in my area they started to spawn like madmen...perhaps I am just paranoid about this...)
yes, I do know it's for security, safety, and etc but even so...the sheer numbers of cameras I've seen nowadays is astounding. Doesn't anybody else think that there should be a limit to how much cameras they should set-up?
example: I was in this store and I counted 13cameras just in the vicinity of 2 (out of 7) cash register/check-out counters, over the top isn't it? There were more in the back of the store.
Another store I went to states (in the changing rooms) "Warning: the fitting rooms may be monitored by the same sex" I didn't realize this until I had already undressed (as stated in that small sticker on the mirror)...I find this really unsettling, I don't know for some people, but I do not want be half naked/undress knowing that there is a potential that a stranger is watching me, harmless or not.
(and yes apparently it is legal in some states to have cameras in dressing rooms as long they inform the customer in some way/not used for any malicious purpose.) http://www.legalmatch.com/law-library/article/are-cameras-in-dressing-rooms-legal.html

they're not really violating any rights. If you go into a business venue then you have to abide by their policies, otherwise you will probably escorted off the premises.

Yes, I know
I never said they were violating any rights...(wait-wait...did I?)

I'm usually okay with security cameras. They're a little unsettling sometimes, but I know there's nothing particularly worth watching about me.
The thing about cameras in the dressing rooms though, that's not cool. I wouldn't ever use that store's dressing room again, if I ever saw that sticker.

Not that I noticed. I think pumpupthevolume was saying that in more in a "Them's the rules, what's the use in complaining?" sort of sense. I could be wrong though.

I build security cameras (well, in a sense, the ones I build are more likely to be for security at an airport or border or something, though, they're quite expensive). After I started doing that, I got a lot more aware of cameras everywhere.
And seriously, you were already watched everywhere. What put you on edge now is probably the fact that they didn't bother to hide it anymore. Those cameras have always been more camouflaged before, but nowadays people in some countries (I'm assuming you're in the US) seem to accept surveillance more readily. So I'm guessing they've just started to save money on hiding the cameras.
That said, I think putting cameras in fitting rooms is way out of line. And you should tell them so.

I haven't seen an actually functioning CCTV camera ever, so I can't really comment on that, but setting up cameras in fitting rooms does violate your right to privacy, barring interpretational differences.
There are times when you will miss what you never had. I wonder how you will find what you so desperately need.

I see them everywhere. There are generally at least 5 per store. Even the small fast food restaurant where I work has ~15. You can see everywhere in the store from almost every angle (except the bathrooms). It's interesting. I don't think its creepy, but I might just be used to it. I don't really care about the dressing room thing, either. I dunno about other people, but for me I don't care if other girls see me in my underwear as long as they're not lesbo. I mean, what's the difference changing in a changing room with a camera monitored by a girl and changing in the dorm at camp with 15 other girls? As long as I'm told about it. No warning would be creepy.
Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?
Yeah it's getting a bit out of hand, but they do help to prevent and solve crimes, so they're gonna be around until we find a better solution. I'm fine with them being anywhere except a changing room and a public bathroom, that's where the line is.

Didn't know that. Isn't the fact that someone is watching the videotape as it's being recorded considered significant?

When you live in a place where almost all places have cameras you stop being aware of that in my city even the public transport have cameras and in general im ok with that, but when i read about the double mirror in the dressing room!?! that's not like changing in the dorm at camp with other girls! 😔

As long as it's not in the bathroom I'm fine; it's not like I'm planning to commit any crimes lol.

dont know how to explain of the legal term "invasion of privacy" (im not that particularly well versed on this lol), but from my understanding, invasion of privacy doesnt apply to you if you're out in public (unless you're in a vehicle you own), and or businesses. And video tapes like this, like i said arent considered invasion of privacy unless they release these videos for no reason (and when i think about it, the more viable charge would probably be sexual harassment). Invasion of privacy i guess is more for i guess private settings (like your house). Police can do it if they get a warrant.

I'm not sure if your vehicle would give you the right of privacy. I'm not sure if this is the valid story but i remember hearing about it a while ago lol.

Jokes aside, it is pretty unsettling to know someone could be watching you constantly in the public, but at the same, like others said, it is also to your own benefit (deters muggers and what not).
