Something along the lines of Crest of the Stars, Heroic Age, or Macross with Alien contact and big space battles.

Try Phoenix. It switches between anicent times and the distant future.

The only thing that I can think of that remotely fits your description is Shin Tenchi Muyo

Try Vandread and maybe cowboy bebop. I'd suggest you also check out the anime versions of these.

Vandread was good, if too short and rushed. A nice companion to the Anime.

I have the Bebop Manga and it does pretty much suck.

Nothing else mentioned is really what I'm looking for.

Outlanders

there are some gundam manga going around, but they are short and probably aren't what you are looking for...

With gundams out of the question I've got nothing except a really old anime called Ninja Robots...

Have you read Lois McMaster Bujold's Miles books? Not manga, no, sorry, but what I think of when someone says space opera.

Planetes is pretty good, if a bit less action, a bit more psychological...

The Five Star Stories is what space opera's are all about. Good luck finding scans though. Finding the real thing is hard enough.

The story "Memories" in the manga anthology Memories of Her... is Space Opera at it's best. It's scanlated and all, though I have an actual colored edition of it...
