He's more like that towards the end because she's conflicted about her feelings while dating him.
He becomes like that and breaks it off with the female lead because she gains feelings for this guy who she would confide in. After falling for the second guy, she spends the rest of the story riddled with guilt even though she wasn't going to act upon those feelings. The male lead thought she was going to break up with him and be with the other guy so he preemptively breaks up with her.
