Well, the reason the scientists say that there is no risk is because there basically isn't. Collisions like the ones they're going for occur all the time. The reason for needing the LHC is because these free collisions aren't of much use to them, since they don't occur under controlled conditions.

Ok seriously now, Isn't it funny that scientist (who are mostly atheists) are trying to find god-cells?

It's not god cells, it's god particle and that is only a nickname for Higgs boson... just another buzzword the media use, nothing got to do with the religious affiliations of the Scientists involved.

Yeah, didn't they "succeeded" in creating a new life-form from water through the experiment? It died a few seconds later though

Too lazy to read thread, so I may be repeating information:

A mini black hole will probably appear. Reason: Black holes are created not because of a presence of high mass, but rather because of high density. When they collide particles at high speeds, the collision may cause the particles to come close enough to create a "mini black hole". Meaning, this possible mini black hole will have a mass no more than the mass of a proton. Which means the mini black hole will have the gravity strength of a proton. -_-
Besides that though, there's a thing called Hawking Radiation. Which basically goes like this: Mass and energy are basically equivalent. So sometimes, matter comes out of energy out of nowhere: a particle and an anti-particle. The two instantly collide and annihilate each other going back to being pure energy (this is partly why people believe there will never be a true vacuum). Sometimes the particles will appear at the horizon of a black hole. (Black holes have an event horizon. Anything within that event horizon will not be able to escape. Anything outside will be fine). And sometimes one of the two particles will fall into the black hole. Now the two particles can't annihilate each other and is forced to exist. So where does this mass come from? The mass is subtracted from the mass of the black hole. So the idea is black holes radiate mass. Which is why we'll be fine.

PS: I've always wanted to die via black hole. You'd be able to see the future of the universe!

I'm not nearly as well informed as this guy seems to be, but my understanding is that while it's true the black holes, if created, will degenerate rapidly; there will also be many collisions (over time), not only one, so one mini black hole might not be able to do much, but many could.

When I first heard about this whole experiment, I instantly thought "Hah! what a waste of time!"
I was expecting the vatican to jump in and shoot some people or something xD
Ok seriously now, Isn't it funny that scientist (who are mostly atheists) are trying to find god-cells?
And the whole black whole experiment? Some kids weren't paying attention in my class because they were pretty convinced that the world was ending -_-

The most scientific scenario (imho) of a black hole appearing near Earth would be when the sun dies and goes supernova...by which earth should be destroyed, and if not, we'll get to see the black hole or "the black bird that consumes the sky", whichever tickles your fancy 🙄 I doubt it can be caused by some crappy cannon (though it looks so awesome in Geass 🤣 )

Humans can't predict the Apocalypse nor can they cause it. The decision is left to god.

First: The Sun doesn't have enough mass to create a black hole, the sun will create a white dwarf aka neutron star at best.

Second: A black hole is more like a cosmic blender than anything else, so if one is created... our atoms are going to be blended until there is just a mess of the periodic table left.

Third: Only Super Massive Black Holes are bit enough to actually not Blend a Human, but you are going to be trapped in the center of the black hole, and is going to be HOT... at least that's the Theory

People don't forget that we can't do anything and if the world is truly going to end due to the black hole, we will have WEEKS, MONTHS or even YEARS (depends on our governments and if the scientist are willing to be lynched after such a huge failure) to do what we want to do till the end 🙂

Some will pray, some will suicide, and some will cause havoc before they die 🤢

Ok ok,

The LHC cost a huge amount of money and yet we don't know exactly what is to be gained from this experiment...

Turn Energy into Matter
Black Hole creation?
Confirming a few Theories

Other than that...

Anyone willing to share the knowledge of why this isn't a black hole of wasted money? 🙄

Here's the deal with the LHC, everything that happens in it also happens out in space randomly. I two super fast particles created a black hoel that grew and grew and grew it would have happened already naturally and we'd all be dead.

We want to find the Higgs particle because gravity makes no freaking sense. Go pick up a paperclip with a magnet. The power of the electromagnetic force in that magnet has more effect on the clip than the gravity of the entire planet. Gravity is ridiculously weak compared to the other three forces (Electromagnetic which you know, the Strong force which holds atoms together and the Weak force which is required fro radioactive decay). The Higgs particle, we think, is responsible for gravity and mass. By finding it we may finally be able to create a theory and maths which takes into account all 4 forces so everything can be explained with the 1 set of rules. Right now we have different maths and laws for the very big and very small and they don't fit together. It's all gravity's fault!

I remember talking about this with my friends and we started to talk about parallel universes and such xD We even talked about how cool would it be if you got sucked into a black hole and landed in a universe where everyone was the opposite gender of themselves in the old universe 🤣 we really have too much free time. Anyway I'm pretty sure someone committed suicide because they truly thought the world was going to end because of the LHC, it was on the news.

Well, the LHC is down in case anyone didn't know. Here is a press release about what happened. So, the LHC will be down for at least two months which means collisions scheduled to begin in October are probably called off.
