My favorite manga genres are : seinen, action, horror, comedy and finally psychological. Psychological has got to be my favorite of my 5 genres. I love the creative exploration of the human mind -the evil and the good etc... Although, psychological mangas are fictitious they still have greatly ;in my opinion, helped me understand the paradox, antithesis, and the contradiction of what is the human conscience. 😃

ever read the book heart of darkness?

After looking at all the manga I read and anime I watch i dun think there is a genre I dun like. Of coarse this excludes hentai, yaoi and yuri.

Well........how about Boy Love genre? You don't like Yaoi? I thought girls like feminine guys.....

Slice of life, seinen (though I admit I can't read ones with graphic sex scenes), shounen (about heroes), and unique shoujo.

I like Romance, Shoujo, Action, Shonen, Horror, Pshychological and my most hated genre ever is yaoi yuck!, no offence but how can you read such corny stuff it gives me the shivers. 🤢

But i simply love mangas that combine action/romance like Tokyo Crazy Paradise 🙂

I can't really say this for certain since my shoujo knowledge is very limited, but i find it hard to to believe that yaoi is more corny then shoujo.

Anybody else find it wierd, that there are so many gender bender mangas out there that it is considerd o whole genre? I always found that pretty strange. Anybody know if transexuality is a common thing in Japan?

I think its really intresting that a lot of girls like Yaoi. I mean its sort of a klishe that men think lesbians having sex as very hot. ( cat fight! cat fight! ) As far as i know here in the west women finding male/male sex hot is very rare.
Yay for big culture differences! Go women, like whatever you want!

I'll read anything that catches my interest, mostly shoujo, seinen, slice-of-life, comedy, some shounen, pretty much whatever... Don't really think in terms of "genre" so much as "does this look like something I'd like to read?".

Things I will normally NOT read: yaoi & yuri (some shounen-ai/shoujo-ai is ok, though), shotacon/lolicon, hentai, horror, shounen with lots of bloody violence, anything that looks overall depressing.

I do enjoy gender-bender manga a lot, not quite sure why. Partly because it places the characters into all kinds of awkward/funny situations, I suppose. 😉

That's weird... most Seinen are usualy way more bloody and gore than any shonen I could think of.
And anyway, shonen (and seinen) are maybe violent and gore sometimes but they are certainly less depressing than most shoujo.
After reading some shoujos I tend to feel hyper depressed, thinking WHY? WHY!?!? (Ayashi no Ceres and Fushigi Yuugi comes to mind...)

Well, it all depends on how you classify, I guess. The seinen that come to mind right now were about adults, living normal life, so not bloody/gory at all. I'm sure there's a wide variety of seinen.

You need to pick your shoujo more carefully. ^_~ I've read bits & pieces of both of those; enough to decide that I have no interest in reading the whole thing.

Reading is escapism for me, so I tend to pick manga (and other reading material) that will leave me with a positive feeling. Not that it has to be 100% happy-happy, but...there's enough lousy stuff happening in the real world, I don't need to read about it happening in imaginary worlds too.

Edit: I also tend to avoid doujins like the plague. (O_o)

But shoujos, in my experience, do tend to get more sentimental and melodramatic than your average shonen.
Shonen are usualy easy to understand: * One loser.

  • anywhere between 3 and 35 girls in love with that loser
  • Some action (might involve one or more bad guys getting hurt or dead, but who cares they are evil right?)
  • Sometimes the main characters get gaught in a terrible hopeless situation!! (OMG!!) but don't panick! in the next chapter comes the solution!
  • He always (or almost) saves the girl and/or the world
  • A lot of ecchi

you see all that is hardly depressing, but I could enderstand that it gets borring after a while. (I know I'm exagerating ... a lot!)

Anyway, it's probably just me, blood and gores hardly have any effect on me (unless children and kittens are involved). But all that emotional stuff affect me to easy, and I find myself about to cry...
And we do think the same, I also rather read stuff to escape reality, more enjoyable 😃

there is some really nice stuff like that. I enjoy all kind of seinen, but the slice of life seinen stuff really could get more attention. I would consider [real](http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=142) and [ciguatera](http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=2017) really good examples.

Depends though.

As for me, I usually read mangas with firearms, action, adventure, shonen and even the occasional sports (Soccer) manga, though I try to read manga that has theme of security forces involved such as police or military.
