Well, I think both are players in that game, and it's hard to tell which weights more since there are lot of things in play.

Ahh the whole nature nurture debate.

I get enough of that in my psychology classes.

It's both. They both play a part in our personality. What the question is, which one has more of an influence?

Is it our surroundings and the people we hang around shaping our personality?

Or do you have such a short temper because you got it from your mum? 🤣

It's what you do with your personality that matters. Who cares where it comes from?

I think it is both, but I think environment plays a bigger role than genetics. But I also think those aren't the only ones that should be included.

i dont really think that the son of a criminal would be fated to be bad without a choice but if that certain son is trained to be a criminal as well then that person will really be bad...thats what i think.. 😮

human don't have the ability to transfer ability to their new born..
(laugh at scientist who thought that was possible, but they were the first step in genetics)

Surrounding baby and influence. 😀

I don't see how genes could have anything to do with personality. 😔
Children act as their parents not because of genes but because their parents are there. It's an environmental effect

Quote from Dr. Love

I think it depends 80% on your environment and 20% on your genetics..

I agree - the stats should be about right..

Genetics does play an important role... there are plenty of aspects of our personalities that are predetermined. In fact, I'd be willing to give it the dominant percentage as long as we're talking about innate personality archetypes and functions- the way that we learn, perceive, analyze, etc. etc. Those are all genetically inherited by necessity, I think. Obviously nature and early methodologies plays a role here, particularly when it comes to developing belief structures, but a lot of the way we function seems to be naturally formed.

When we start talking about personality in terms of day to day activities, though, I think we can expect more of an influence of nurture. People act differently around different people and adapt to social situations in ways that, on some level, they believe will be beneficial to them, though internal processes still have to be used to initially make the decision to adopt a specific behavior.

So in the external sense, personality is predominantly nurture-oriented while relying on baser functions and processes in order to evaluate which actions are appropriate, while the way our internal process functions is largely naturally formed but shaped by some external elements like belief structures. It's a combination, to be certain, but the dominant trait depends on how you're looking at it.

Or at least that's how I see it.

BUUUUUUUUUMPPPP

I wrote 3 research essays on this, let's see if I can sum it up in a TL;DR...

I believe that the personality just comes from the person, but I don't like to side with "genetics." Every individual is true to himself; he possesses the free will to be able to think for himself. The environment, yes, is very influential, but does not ultimately decide your personality.

This is how the process goes:
action from envionrment => our senses take it in => our mind creates ideas and beliefs as a response

I guess genetics might play a role in the "idea-creating" factor, but it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth to submit to such an answer.

tl;drThe personality comes from the individual.

I like daisukidesuyo's response.
No matter what your environment, your peers, your family, or your genetic buildup makes of you, I believe that the very basis of your personalty would be the same. Basic morals, basic beliefs.
Saying you grew up with a stable family and life as compared to a non-stable one, it would no doubt affect who you are and what you believe, but not the bare minimum of who you are. For example, if one were abused or not in their childhood they would still believe abuse is wrong. Or, a full-on psychotic murderer would still be a murderer despite how he grew up.
But that's just what I believe 🙂

genetics play much bigger role I'd say, I agree with you Saons

I have an identical twin brother, he is only 10 min older than me, since our birth we were raised in almost exact same environment, went to the same school same class until graduated from high school, but our personality is quite different, my brother is lot more active and talkative, but I'm introvert and calm.

another example, my brother can concentrate on many things at once, yet I'm only able to focus my mind on one thing.

experience, genetic and enviroment. things like getting bullied sine kindergarten do influcence the personality way more than growing up rich or poor.
it is proven that some characteristics can be inherited through genetics, so they also have an influence.
my opinion about this was about this was like this since i read the book "the third twin" by ken follett, so media also has an influence
