I just think it's way too lighthearted. None of the characters really have dark backstories or anything and they haven't killed anyone off. I just think the story would be better if it was a bit darker.
Soka and Katara's mother was killed in war, Aank never had a family, but all his friends and the monk that raised him were killed by the fire army. And for most of the show it seems that Suko's mom was murdered by Suko's father while protecting his son. And Azula blames Suko for her mothers dead .....yeap..thats not dark back stories...just normal teenager daily life.
hmm. Youv may have a point. I think I overlooked those because of the overall tone of the story being so light.
well its a kids show so they do have to be a little vague about some of the dark stuff. the creators even said before the puppetmaster episode that it was gonna be really dark. personally didn't scare me or anything, but for the usual tone of the show it was pretty shocking. just gotta filter out a bir of the kids stuff to see whats behind it
Never seen the puppetmaster episode. Sounds like it's better than most of the episodes, though. What season is it in?
Glados is a bitch. She made me kill the companion cube, the only friend I'll ever have. 😢

It is actually episode 8 of the 3rd season (Production code 308) or 48 in the total count. But close enough 😁

Sure, it doesn't have the sex or violence you usually read. But that doesn't cheapen the show at all because I believe a good story can easily convey what it wants to it's viewers without relying on unnecessary fanservice...
That's one of the things I love about the show-it's one of the few I can easily recommend to people on the conservative side. It plays it safe on sex, the fight scenes are awesome without being gory and I think avatar may win points simply 'cause it ends it's fights. Sometimes the pacing feels slow, but I still know the episode is going somewhere and that slow pacing is part of the atmosphere and theme-thankfully the animators aren't dragging out a fight just to fill in space.
On darkness? Besides all the backstory, the entire world is at war and the kids are constantly going through broken countries or cities affected by it-which I consider pretty heavy for an age group that gets Pokemon lodged at them. And Avatar's got all the same themes of Naruto or any other anime pitched at the same age group-loyalty, friendship, family, ties, betrayal, honor.
Zuko's a great character 'cause he's one of those that keeps getting the right choice thrown at him and makes the wrong one 'cause it seems right for whatever stupid reason. Sympathetic villians are hard to come by in general-in children's tv even more so, but Avatar pulls it off.
My only real complaint is that I find Katara to be totally generic love interest (except for her badboy fetish-it redeems her a bit) but shrugs I can always overlook her because of the awesomeness that is Toph.

don't forget pete+pete. not that that they could bring it back considering the actors are like 25 and 30 by now.

I like it well enough. Not something that I'll seek out but it is watchable as long as you don't expect it to be inspirational or have any surprise twists or the like.

I love it too. I hadn't watched any of it then I picked it up a while ago and have now watched them all. The only American cartoon that seriously holds to the anime genre and it does a great job of it too.

u guys are anime racists
Jeebas
Anime...is short for animation lol
come on
ok avatar may not have the japanese puns that u see so very often
but i find it alot more easier to understand considering most of the jokes
are american influence
you don't have to be japanese to make anime
i give them thier props that they basically definded it and built it from the ground up
but that doesn't mean that other countries and other artists suck just because they don't kill ppl off in thier show
last time i checked One piece has never killed a dam person off unless it was in a flash back(I LOVE ONE PIECE) and cconsidering how much fans it has and how much money it makes i dought that the absense of death truly cheapens the material

Hmm... I just noticed this now, but shouldn't the "it's okay, but can't be compared to REAL anime and manga" option be considered spoiled ballots? I mean, it's' comparing a show to a media type, which I believe is rather unfair. If it wanted to compare, shouldn't it be to another anime with a similar story?
No offense to anyone, I'm just being nitpicky...

umm. What I meant was that it couldn't be compared to Japanese anime and manga. Sorry if I was making too much of a generalization.
