i dig it cuz of the story. as for darkness,
if they don't stop an insane despoting conqueror, then the entire world as they know it will cease to exist. oh yeah and the country in power is imbibing it's youth to be part of the master race. nazi maybe? .
And to all the people who say they hate it but havent seen it are just stupid. you hate the idea of it, not the actual substance. It's like people who hate bacon but have never eaten it.
As for it being a anime imitation, that may be true. But the early anime and manga borrows heavily from early disney and comic books that were published in america. so who's copying who?

Those who hate it haven't seen enough of it. I know this because i felt the same way, untill i sat down and actually watched a good portion. Though i haven't caught up, by the end of first season there HAS been a death of sorts, and the series is full of dramatic moments and some thought provoking ones. To say this is the best North American Cartoon is an understatement, it is amazing The fighting choreography is just plain beautfiul, and the characters (though they can be annoying a lot of times due to their plain silliness) are very moving.
You can pick it up part-way through if you wanna enjoy its splendid fighting scenes, but if you really want to be able to fully appreciate the depth of some of its characters and plot, you must watch it properly in order. Just like any other anime or manga out there, its hard to enjoy it at its best if you watch bits and pieces here and there.
P.S. It is most definitely not generic American Cartoon plot-line with never-ending optimism. It has a lot of down to earth moments.
