China’s state news media stated yesterday that the government is to ban 38 Japanese comics and animated series for what they describe as “severely improper content” regarding the use of violence and terror.
These include the international hit comics Attack On Titan and Death Note as well as the cartoon TV series Terror in Resonance.
Dozens of internet providers have also been fined for hosting comics and anime that fall foul of this guideline, while eight websites have been shut down, with the government stating “by providing illegal contents, these companies violated regulations on Internet cultural management, audio and visual programs and services”

According to Liu, more titles will be added to the blacklist as the crackdown on online comics and animations intensifies, and repeat offenders will have their business licenses revoked.

Could a Chinese MU user comment on this?

China does ban some video games too, but people can just find it through somewhat less legal means. Just like they can find these manga through less than legal means too, though it'll be more risky and might take some more time.

I'd guess its because of the worsening diplomatic relationship between China and Japan, not because they contain "violence and terror." 😀

I looked around in the chinese forums for attack on titans, and I don't think many people know or care about this....
They're just calling the people in the cultural department(or whatever it is) old and disconnected...
I mean, it's china, you can always find less legal ways of getting things. Or you could just go to Japan to buy the stuff 😃

well
there are alot of japanese comics that would[should] not ever see the light of day in other countries

and death note is about mentally ill children that think they make the world btter by killing those they see as not worthy
attack on titan is about giants eating ppl/snapping them in 2[read only the first 2-3chapters coz it felt silly] so...thats kind silly

if your first priority is not MONEY the politicians handling these matters should stop alot of shit like this from coming out
Toriko is a good example of this...Animal abuse in its purest form

That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw the OP, too! 🤣

China has zero interest in having Japanese businesses profit of them and they further have a comparable quota of 34 foreign films a year in cinemas only.
They will probably give up on foreign movies for real when America has build them enough Imax cinemas and their effect houses (somewhat) caught up. Good luck Hollywood...
The government obviously get´s that all of the banned content will be available on the countries sizable piracy market but here only Chinese "businessmen" will profit so the consent of the banned series should barely a factor. The banned series are as of now:

Terror in Resonance
Blood-C
Highschool of the Dead
Ergo Proxy
Parasyte
The Skull Man (The sole entry i have no experience with in any form so i will try it soon.)
Another
Inferno Cop
Afro Samurai
Tokyo Ghoul √A
Sword Art Online II
Tokyo ESP
Tokyo Ravens
Devil May Cry
RIN - Daughters of Mnemosyne
The Testament of Sister New Devil
Attack on Titan
Corpse Party
Strike the Blood
Death Note
Deadman Wonderland
Date A Live II
Psycho-Pass
Devilman Lady
School Days
Those Who Hunt Elves
Elfen Lied
High School DxD
Samurai Bride
So, I Can't Play H!
Girls Bravo: Second Season
Kanokon
Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero
Sakura Diaries
Black Butler
Claymore
Dance in the Vampire Bund

One can debate for days why these series were chosen but Those Who Hunt Elves, the banning of second seasons only, the lack of actual hentai and barely any actual gore proves that they just went wide to make the list look more "legit".
Their true goal will be to get One Piece, Naruto and parts of Gundam off the market so one of these should show up on the next blacklist. And the next...
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc, Eden of the East, KlK and Queen's Blade should be next but let´s see if the government will put a bit of money into government funded toons or Manhua too.

The included Video gaming in China is worth a read too.

The basic reason for this is diplomatic relationship between China & Japan...plus China got bad blood between various other countries...

Pew Reseach Center indicated that (as of 2014) 10 surveyed countries have the most negative view (Below 50%) of China. With the countries being Japan (7%), Vietnam (16%), Turkey (21%), Italy (26%), Germany (28%), India (31%), Poland (32%),
Jordan (35%), United States (35%), and Colombia (38%). ~[Via Wikipedia]

China bans various things including otaku stuff like Anime, Manga...as well as Movies, Technical Stuffs...while they love seeing their market share rising, they hard gives two shits about their fellow countries' economy...
Wherever you're from if go to market and search for duplicate items or cheap spare parts you'll see their name coming up time to times...that's doesn't mean that, they haven't got any genuine stuffs...they got plenty of CooL stuffs too....but, well...

[color=red]@TaoPaiPai[/color] - Are you a old guy or something ? Or. A wannabe Critic ?
How will you watch movies like Saw(series) or Wrong Turn then ?
If banning is the only way, then also, TV Series like Game Of Thrones, my favourite along with Breaking Bad, Sherlock, should be banned too...or. Are they banned already ? I'm not recommending them for Kids though(Sherlock is fine btw)...^^

Animal Abuse ?? Hard of a show called Man vs Wild ? It shows some real stuff, if you call it Animal abuse!

Man they're all fictions, and they comes with content ratings...people just needs to watch things moderately!!
Sorry btw, my tone was probably rude! ^^

Is this for real 😕 Omg, I'm glad I'm not living in China, lol. Still going there after visiting Japan and Korea next year though. I'd better stack up some manga and anime on my laptop then 🤣

China may as well go after Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura and all the other magical girl stuff while they're at it on the basis that these series corrupts the mind of girls and give them funny ideas about female empowerment while promoting that they solve their issues with fighting and violence.

What will those online readers do, is the question. Most online readers are hosted from China, they will lose their save heaven.

Although it's hardcore that China banns most manga/animes, I wouldn't be that worried. I mean...it's China, if you can't find anything legally then there's million ways to obtain it illegally. Chinese people always find a way.

but maaaaan, I gotta admit I'm plenty amused. Communist propaganda and shitty diplomatic relations with Japan at their best 🤣
