but i'm confused as to why itachi is taking sasuke's eye when he doesn't have mangekyou yet. will he just get a normal sharingan or will it upgrade when it becomes his?

It never once said Madara used his brother's eyes, it only said he took them. I think it's the same idea as killing your best friend to gain the mangekyou, the eyes aren't the important part it's the sacrifice required that is.
