Hard to at times since I am one of those weird ones. That is I am outside my families church and way away from any of the other things my uncle speaks on up front of the church.
On politics its really arrrr we are lost. 😕
love and peace
Only with my family, and that's rare.
Most of the talking I do, I do on the internet, and I don't like to talk to people on the internet about "serious stuff".
Religion and politics are really important things to some people, so if you get in an argument with them it can turn ugly as they try to defend their beliefs.
Nothing wrong with talks like that if you enjoy it, but I don't.
Also I don't know much on either subject; I'm not too interested in them, so I wouldn't be a good conversational partner anyway.
I avoid them, since I am a successful troll
every single time I discuss them.

All the more reason to engage in them. : D
When something relating to those two subjects have happened, or when someone brings it up... I quite like talking around in circles. 🤣

I would avoid politics and religion whenever I can. As to other serious stuff, it depends whether I am interested in the topic.
Actually a lot of people don't talk about politics or sometimes even religion in a serious manner. So they are not necessarily serious stuff.

Every chance I get.
Though, I find with most people that discussing politics and religion is not even worth it, since they are all biased.

“One can only give an unbiased opinion about things that do not interest one, which is no doubt the reason an unbiased opinion is always valueless. The man who sees both sides of a question is a man who sees absolutely nothing.” ~ Oscar Wilde

I'm a political monster, and I form very strong opinions, but I take care to get my facts right. And when debating, I will listen to what the other person is saying; my opinions are not always rigid.
Religion is a subject I prefer to keep private, however.

Oh I do discuss them but only on a certain board and only when my brains are in good condition.
Without good moderation and people who can balance out one's lack of knowledge or who're very open to topics, a well-meaning discussion can easily spiral out of hand.
As for "having knowledgeable people", it is a must to balance out all the opinions. Otherwise, a discussion can turn into one where everyone is forced to assume things if neither side is able to reach agreement or see eye-to-eye. And assuming too much can lead to poor judgement, a very distorted view of events and so on. Plus, it always helps to have someone who can help explain and dissect your point of view, if some of the participants can't understand you.
I avoid as much as possible.
Especially politics. I can't stand politics. When I get into a discussion, I get really wound up because my views are pretty strong. Every citizenship lesson i had last year, i'd get into an argument with my teacher about it. Thank god I don't have that class anymore 🤣
As for religion, I don't like to discuss much. This time it's the other people that get heated up. I'm open to other views, of course I am. I respect that everyone has their own beliefs, so I tend not to bother discussing because for one, I don't want to change my views, and secondly I don't want change other people's views as well.
Also religion bashing is horrible when discussions get out of hand 😔
