No it's because they spend ALL of their time doing that when they could be out there having a life

You know... sometimes people get more out of relationships with 'imaginary' characters than with real people. Sometimes people who are not "socially retarded" or virgins spend their time in the real world with people who act as real as imaginary characters. Wonderful things can come from just the imagination alone. People need people, yes, I agree with that. But what people don't need, is to have their "real" defined by others. It's crass to describe the relationship between a person and a chosen endeavor with "socially retarded virgin" and such when there is so much more to people than what you think is real about them.
