Fruits Basket was better, because it had a plot that was already well underway before it started getting into describing everyone's life stories.
Hoshi Wa Utau seems to have spent the whole time from the start of the manga on describing everyone's backgrounds. Nothing else has really happened, and there hasn't been a whole lot of relationship development between anyone except maybe Chihiro and Sakuya.
I'm still kind of waiting for this story to have a point. Like in Furuba, it was solving the mystery of the curse and learning how to break it. But this story seems like it doesn't really have a purpose.
