The picture book argument won't hold water. The sell manga for the same price as regular books over here in Japan. Hell I can find most older series used for less than a US dollar each, and brand new they are rarely more than 5. The US publishers are either getting ripped off by their Japanese counter parts or taking advantage of the US consumer.

sigh, im pretty much sure that ppl outside of the u.s, who dont know any better might fall for that.
foe example, here manga considered as a treasure for minority of ppl who r hooked cuz they found some antique shonen in english in some anonymus special bookstore under a rock.
they like it, but the store doesnt have all the volumes.
so they wont think of downloading it cuz they dont know its possible, the idea wont even cross their minds. what goes on their mind is go to online stores. so they find the book, look at the price and think "whoa that must be some collectors item!!" so they buy it.
pure lack of knowledge.

I support the mangaka, but NOT the USA translation/distribution companies.

If manga starts making a decent ammount of money in the USA, they will go after scanlations. Look at what is starting to happen with anime...

Plus if what I hear is correct the Mangaka get maybe penny or so from every copy sold in the US.

I'm pretty sure the margin they make on each print is much higher than in Japan. Barring the costs to license a manga the translation and printing shouldn't cost all that much. I'm not inclined to pay €10 or $10 a book when it is likely that they sell it for far less.

I don't mind paying if it isn't to much, like, over here in belgium the only way to accually get manga is on-line stores.
I pay about 12 us dollars for 1 volume(=8euro's), thats the price for most.
Don't buy any anime because it just costs way to much for a poor student like me 😛 (between 25 and 70euro/dvd)

I own several manga series and I'll buy more in the future.
Ofcourse that doesn't stop me from downloading 😀 , my hard drive is filled with manga and anime.

I guess it's supplies and demands. When the suppliers control a series, and only they have the right to that 1 series, they can control the price. Consumers buy how many volumes depend on value they view this series. And if the consumers don't give high value to this particular series and they don't buy much ==> poor sales of the series ===> some people will just go and blame the online scanlations for the problem ====> because it's easier to blame others than to access how you can attract more customers.

Retarded thread is retarded.

No, seriously.

"Manga is too expensive"?

Are you high?

If you think manga is too expensive, have you not seen anime? $30 (Roughly) for 3 episodes (Assuming you're buying something that came out recently)? Now that's too expensive.

I'm sorry, but manga is not too expensive. If anything, it's cheap. I've been buying manga for years now and I'm not rich by any means. I'm almost poor.

i buy japanese manga, it is cheaper that way, plus i like it. i then buy american anime (not for the dubs) because japanese dvds cost somewere around 5,000 yen which is about $40-45. american anime is about $20-30. of course i cant buy much because i am a poor student but i do buy the series i really enjoyed every now and then. i feel that i have to help the economy, (even if i am a cheepskate)
