On the above camera, his opponent was centimeters from touching the wall when Phelps comes from behind to place first; I was astonished.

Ehh, oh well. He'll become obscure in a few Olympic games.

Well, if he wins his next race he will have won the most gold metals ever, and in a single olympics, so we shall see how obscure he becomes.

yeah, he will become obscure. In this world, even Nobel prize winners and presidents become no bodies. This is the real world

Hes already won the most Gold medals ever, he just needs the next to have the most in one Olympics.

He could become a nobody but he'll still have more money in his bank account then all of us on this website put together. 🤣

So? Most people don't even approach that level of fame anyway. And Nobel prize winners remain obscure even while receiving the award. Now, if someone wins 8, then that person might obtain some glory.

no double post.

Ehh, in this world, there are many professions. Phelps chose this and sticked with it. Luck, training, and genetically predisposed features enabled him to do this. And that's all I think, that he will do.

How about presidents, the most influence person in this country? Most of them just become trivia fact on Jeopardy.

Congratulations on Phelps, but I must scold the public for emphasizing an "entertainer" like the gladiators, and not a scientists, whose inventions save many.

Because most of them don't do anything. Everyone knows Babe Ruth. Everyone knows Michael Jordan. Everyone knows Muhammad Ali. What Phelps is doing is akin to what they did.

Exactly, people care about things that does not matter. A fad, a modern gladiator, but not true heroes. But even Phelps are far from Ali, Ruth, or Jordan. He needs to do much much more.

Like what? Win more Gold medals at the Olympics, the highest stage for any athlete? Set more world records? You must just not be a fan of athletics.

And as far as scientific innovators; the reason they don't get the accolades is because of the nature of the field. Only the most innovative people, with the most lasting effect on science live in notoriety for an extended amount of time. Like Einstein, Niels Bohr, Issac Newton, Thomas Edison, Tesla, Louis Pasteur, Lord Kelvin, and so many more. Just because the average person doesn't know their names doesn't mean they are obscure, or that they don't garner the great respect that they deserve.

Also, on athletics: People revere and reward those who are at the pinnacle of anything, be it athletics, science, literature, or athletics. It is just easier to connect with people on a physical level. I'm speaking as an athlete in this context.

he's half-fish / half-god. o_o

No way Phelps'll become obscure. he's won the most gold medals for any one athlete in Olympic history. one more medal and he'll have the most gold medals in one Olympics.

I'm with ahoaho; people who excel in their field become well-known. it takes a lot of hard-work to become the best and people respect that.
