Phelps 100m fly
Quote from bedob
i've read that he takes 12 000 calories a day...and that would kill a normal person in no time.
Accordin to what i hear, that is impossible. Our news said it was at about 7000 a day
The beast hv just evolved into monster..

I really do wonder if he's come secret U.S. genetically altered drug modified super human from the secret service. But we'll never find out because it's probably almost impossible to detect.

Well, if he wins his next race he will have won the most gold metals ever, and in a single olympics, so we shall see how obscure he becomes.
yeah, he will become obscure. In this world, even Nobel prize winners and presidents become no bodies. This is the real world
I read all your posts, but I'm not gonna quote all of them. You are right, Michael Phelps will become obscure, but it'll take a long time. Something that I notice is that athletes, although the great ones are revered for long periods of time (and some even have books), are mostly kept up in peoples memories through spoken word and the occasional documentary covering the athletes life. Nobel Prize winners and scientists who make revolutionary discoveries and things of that sort are not spoken of among the average person. However, just because they aren't spoken of, doesn't mean they aren't appreciated. People may not express their appreciation, or even know how much they appreciate the innovations of these scientists, but if these innovations were to be wiped out in the blink of an eye, people would realize just how good they had it. Also, great innovators will always be kept in the history books, and will be talked about in schools. Athletes are rarely ever taught in schools.
Anyone who enters a field of science and other things of that sort probably know that they won't be hailed by the average person. And maybe the average person should hail these people more. However, can you really blame them for admiring the athlete more than the scientist? Scientists who come up with revolutionary innovations and Nobel Prize winners are not average people. Their mindset is above and beyond the average person. Even if the media tried to talk about these people as much as they talk about athletes, the average person would probably be like, "What the hell are they talking about?" The average person is more inclined to listen to news about athletes than innovators because it is easier to comprehend than the work of innovators. I mean, if everyone could understand these scientists, and everyone was as smart as these people, than it would be a pretty boring world.
I also believe that it is wrong that athletes get payed millions of dollars and get enormous amounts of spotlight because they play games, while teachers live on a small salary. Yes, it is wrong, but that's just how the world is. It's hard for me to have any type of resentment (or something like that) towards athletes because of that. They are people too, so they shouldn't be blamed for the flaws of the world.
@gan17: I know what you mean. Records seem to be broken at an alarming pace, in every sport. All of the explanations that other posters have made is good. However, I got one radical view. What if we, as a race, are just evolving. If you are someone who believes in evolution, don't you find it strange how we seem to believe that we are at the end of the evolution chain. I mean, is there any reason to believe this. If you are a religious person, you tend to not agree with evolution, but if you are religious, then it is easier to understand why humans are the supposed "final" beings. We were made in god's image (although, I actually think god is made in people's image). I'm probably getting dangerously close to a controversial topic, but the point I'm trying to make is that there should be no reason not to believe that we, as a race, are just evolving. Maybe 1000, or 10,000, years from now the average person (or whatever is the dominant species) will be able to the 100m fly in 50 sec with no problem. I don't know, I just think that maybe people are evolving. That's enough of my crazy talk.

That was REDICULOUS. I cannot believe he won that, he must have made a deal with the devil
...or he made a deal with a really obscure steroid that doesn't show on the current test! 😛
In the eyes of eternity everyone will eventually become obscure, but I think he will be remembered by the people who actually care about swimming as a sport and withing is lifetime. I mean he is only 23 (makes me feel like an underachiever just hearing that!) there is so much potential, who knows what he may do in the future. Do you think that the fact that he has adhd compributes to the fact that he has so much energy to spear and compete almost everyday and win?!

Evolution is a process which requires thousands of years, not a mere century. It's possible that 10.000 years from now someone could make 100m fly in 50 sec, but this doesn't justify the recent breaking of records.
It's just that medicine and other aspects are progressing in an exponential way in last decades resulting in an improvement of results and also there are more interests gravitating the sports, so the result is that in China they get children apart from families to make them do sports from earlier years. They also monitor athletes nutrition and many aspects that years ago were not monitored.

there was an article with that picture, saying that apparently the olympics are ushering in a harsh "no drugs, no competing" rule which could keep him from competing in the next games

There's still 3+ years until the next games, hopefully his attitude about drugs changes by then
