Our grade went to college today, to listen to a lecture about America.. And apparantly the stereotype that's usually associated with America was fat people..

There was also loud, obnoxious, etc.. But those are stereotypes, which means not true..

The young woman who gave the lecture was from Cincinnati, apparantly.. Kind of cool; giving lectures in foreign countries.. 🤣

Pros: You get the basics of something down.
Cons: You don't understand the find details that really make something what it is.

That's not even generalizations anymore. That's just flat out hate and ignorance. I look at that and I wonder if that's a joke or something because although I do believe there are stupid people out there, to think that someone can be that stupid is just mind-boggling.

Anyways, back on topic. I think that generalizations can never be good. Now, I believe that some generalizations can be bad, while others are just nothing (as in neutral, or no effect). Generalizations are mostly the result of people not getting exposure to different cultures. Where I'm from, you have a wide variety of cultures, so there tend to be few cases of generalizations, or even racism. It's still present, but from the things I've heard from other places, I can say that it's minor in comparison to other places (at least with the younger generation). Hundreds of years from now (if it even takes that long, and if the world is still going strong), people are going to look back at our times, like we look back at the time of slavery, and they'll say, "It took them over 100 years to finally have an African-American win the Primaries and run for President? What's wrong with them?" That and they'll look at how people discriminated against other people and they'll just be baffled at how we acted. At first I didn't believe so, but when you look at the difference of mindset between the young generation and the older (such as grandparents) you'll see a drastic change.

Redacted

First paragraph: That's no joke. There's many a religious folk in America that believe that literally.

Second: Of course they will hundreds of years from now. People always look at the past and find it hard to understand how or why a culture did what it did.

Pro: Very simple and easy way to think. Allows many people to hold to beliefs that they find comfortable and prevent new and more factual information from disturbing their own little world.

I think that, in the end, generalizations might cause more harm than good.

Polite bump.

Ah yes, I remember this piece of homework! 😛 Hmm, this could still serve as a good thread. Generalizations are bad, if you actually believe in them. But sometimes you have no choice but to use them, or else you'll end up with a 10 page essay. I dislike it when someone accuses you of generalizing on an internet forum, when you were just too lazy to go more in-depth in the topic at hand. Give me a break, will you! 🤣

Generalizations = bad to believe in.
Generalizations = acceptable to use in a silly internet argument.

Not for a thesis though, haha~
