This happened ages ago but I do remember my mum sneaking on me while I was watching Gravitation. I was 13 (maybe 14?) and fairly new to the BL industry, fufu. She asked me what the show was about and even lingered in the room for a couple of episodes. I was terrified for a minute there, I remember the heat growing to my cheeks. And I didn't lie to her either. Just said it was an anime (she had no idea what that was, of course) about a boy who wanted to be a singer and a very mean novelist who he fell in love with. She never once bothered me about it after that.

As for my dad, let’s say he gives zero f-ucks about whatever I like to read or watch or do, so long as I don’t get myself into trouble.

I don’t think anything like that ever happened again, mostly because a) it was around that time that I got my first personal laptop and b) I keep all my stuff (manga, graphic novels, whatever) in my room, near my bedside table, and I've made it clear, over the years, that I don’t like people going through my stuff. Not that my family needed a warning. My parents always trusted their kids enough to let them be.

It’s also a good thing my brother belongs to the – let’s call it – “otaku community” as well. He knows what BL is, he knows that I read it and he has been mocking me about it for the last 8 years of my life. Like PansyWansyLinsy said, it’s easier to come clean, as it were, to someone who’s familiar with Japanese culture or just with manga/anime in general. However, it’s not like I have ever made a huge secret of my dirty little secret. Oh no, no, no.

Back in high school I would draw fanart in class, post tribute videos online about said and said couple, all the nine yards. The whole thing was pretty PG-13 though. I heard comments like “can’t you think of anything else?” all the time, but I never felt ashamed or prejudiced because of it. Unfortunately, my girl friends never liked manga (they didn't even know what manga was in the beginning) and the few guys who liked it didn't read BL. So I would talk about manga and stuff with them but it would be pointless to bring up the subject of Yaoi.

My current boyfriend also knows I love BL and he knew so well before we started dating. He doesn't care. He doesn't care about anime or manga in the least. I have better chances of discussing this subject with his 8 year-old brother (who's freaking awesome, btw) than with him. I wouldn't mind reading Yaoi next to him at all. The moment he realised it was manga, he wouldn't be interested enough to peek 😐 🤣

gosh!!

I once made a friend, because we both read manga (I don't remember how we found that out). And she also read yaoi. me too, but I still had some shame. She started to talk about it and there was this guy next to us (a friend, not only a stranger standing there). And he KNEW what it was! awkward. he did not join us in the conversation, but made such a remark, that he knows about it and that it was long ago he had read a manga... but the friend didn't stop talking about it. I was like: "hmm, uhm..." lol.

Oh boy...I wonder how many people caught me reading yaoi....
The first person was my brother. He always peeks into my ipad trying to figure out what I'm doing so I eventually gave up and was like you know what, I'll show you what I'm reading and I showed him the most explicit yaoi I could find at the time -gravitation dj- so yeah that's how my secret got out in the first place.
Later on, I just got open about it. Why? Because all I ever think about is yaoi. When I hear the word sex, the first thing I think about is butt sex between two hot guys. When I see a sexy guy, the first thing I think about is whether he'd be a seme or uke in a relationship. Gosh, my brain works wierd 😀
At school, I read yaoi novels at times, and there's always those says-it-all pictures. So yeah, my friends found out and after that I was like whatever...I even tried to get them into it.
My mom knows about it, and I think I told her about it after 2 years of reading yaoi.
My dad doesn't care what I read and thinks of them all as a "waste of time".
My boyfriend though, that was one of the most awkward scenes ever. Well he found out when we were still friends but still...pretty awkward. Me and my friend were talking about a yaoi manga -I can't remember the name- and my friend, aka current boyfriend, heard what we were talking about and was like..what did I just hear?! It was hilarious and awkward at the same time 😀 and for a while he was suspicious whether me and my friend are straight since we're into gay guys having sex but yeah it all worked out 😀
So yeah, I'm really REALLY R-E-A-L-L-Y open about it right now. But I wasn't at first. It's just that a lot of people found out and they didn't think of me in a different way or didn't judge me so I just let it all out now. Still acting secretive around my guy friends though...unless we've known each other for quite a while but yeah. 😀

i haven't been caught......yet. << >>;; knocks on all the wood

my parents don't know at all. they know i like anime and manga and stuff, but they don't question the specifics. being raised in a pretty christian household, i feel like im conditioned to hide it, even though i don't think my parents would care too much lol. my mom might be a little ;/ and might freak out a bit if she saw some of the explicit stuff, but i don't think my dad would care one bit. as long as it wasn't getting me pregnant, it was all cool XD

so even though no one has physically SEEN me read anything, my sister and friends know. i just flat out told my sister and best friend one day in casual conversation, and i've been pretty open about it around them ever since. my male friends know, especially one since he was like "you seem like you read pretty interesting manga. recommend me something!" and i was like "UM" lmao. i like to tease my male friends now, especially when they're watching something like wrestling or american football or something and i'm like "look at them touch each other" and of course they all put on their best ;( faces. hehehe.

I haven't got caught by my family so no one in my house knows that I read BL. They do know that I love reading manga and watching anime though. Even my dad watches anime! He watches mostly shounen like Hunter x Hunter. Anyway, if my parents were to find out, they'd go ballistic. Yaoi is obviously gay porn. The fact that it's gay sex would make them even more disappointed in me. My sister I think would be more open-minded if she caught me. We discussed things like Skins which contains some explicit scenes. I think she'd be speechless though but then I'd just argue, "Don't you find two guys making out hot?"

As for my friends, only my otaku friends know about it. Most of them read BL as well. I'm more open with those who are in the circle. So if you're an otaku and ask if I am a fujoshi, I wouldn't deny being one. Actually, my good friend who is male has read yaoi too. We even text each other about it and discuss it at school. Sometimes, we'd talk about our male friends and match-make them with one another. We'd joke about who would be the uke or seme of the two. However, don't misunderstand though. He isn't gay. He's definitely a hetero. It's just that he is very open about it. Besides, I think that isn't about your sexual preference but rather just the attraction. I'm not a lesbian but I still find some girls attractive.
