They aren't, you can find pretty much anything in american comics. Like JtHM (Johnny the Homicidal Maniac) Comics in general refers to All types of Graphic Novels, from comic strips in the Sunday paper all the way to comic books witch are full of superheros and not so super heroes.

As for the free comics, it's as simple as knowing the name of the series and the issue number. Then all you need to do is find a site I like to call Filestube.

In UAE we have these kid magazines full of funny and "educational" comics. I liked reading them when I was young, but that's it.

Here in Serbia comics are usually on the level on newspaper gag comics. There are some attempts from time to time to create something original but it never catches up. Manga here are practically non existent, probably due to the absence of tradition in this region. Kids now-days prefer other stuff over reading comics. But I have to say that the comics which are popular in all ex-Yugoslavian countries are Italian comics like Zagor, Dylan Dog, Alan Ford and others (these names probably doesn't mean anything to you, right :-) ). Popularity of this goes all the way back from the 60's and they are published even today. Although fewer people read them now then before.

recently I've read a bunch of comics (spiderman/batman) and they are ok but not on par with manga. comic books aren't the same kind of thing as manga, manga is mainly story based where as 95% of comic book issues are bad guy of the week (month in most cases). also the same series have been going on for over 40 years and that's very different from manga as well. what i'm getting at is it is like comparing apples to oranges. however the golden and silver ages of comics has passed and the modern comic books aren't nearly as good as they used to be.

I'd like to think that we have pretty good local comics here in Malaysia, and we do have some talented comic artists like Kaoru, Juice and Zint. Too bad though, the interest here in local comics isn't that high.

The only one that comes to mind is "Lat the Kampung (village) Boy", and with a title like that, you can't seriously be expecting a deep, engaging reading experience. On the other hand, manga is reasonably popular here in Malaysia. We have plenty of cheap localized titles here, although they're all in Malay, and thus I haven't really bought any since I discovered the internet. And Doraemon should be a familiar part of any Malaysian's childhood.

As for US comics, I find them to be equal to their Japanese counterparts. Just not in the same categorizes. US comics tend to be of higher quality, more violent (Hulk), have wittier lines (Deadpool, Spiderman), and have morally ambiguous/antiheroic characters (Punisher, Venom). However, because US comics are also limited by the fact that they try to be more "Realistic" (with the exception of retcons, which can be scarily bizzare), and the fact that the more popular characters are simply never given closure. Mangas aren't limited by such things, and so they tend to have more engaging storylines and more interesting characters.

Din't realize there were actually such talented Malaysian comic artists out there. I've been to ComicFiesta, and to be honest, a lot of the work there is so-so at best. But do these really count as "local comics"? They seem similar in concept to the so called "OEL mangas" that Westerners have.

You just haven't been looking in the right places You should check out imprints instead of the Parent company, or an independent company. I suggest looking up comics done by Dark Horse or Vertigo for story based comic books. Slave Labor Graphics has some pretty dark stuff like Johnny the Homicidal Maniac by Jhonen Vasquez and Lenore, The Cute Little Dead Girl.

US comics range from terrible to mind-blowingly amazing, but I tend to find manga in general more appealing. Still, there are important exceptions of US comics that I find just as genius as some of the Japanese masters.
